I powdercoated my stock plate black. I'm sure you can also paint it. Sandblasting first is a must either way.
You need to make sure you don't get anything on the back of the plate the makes contact with the clutch plates.
Heres how mine came out.:devious

Ah, so it has to be billet aluminium only? Makes sense really. I would be a little concerned about paint flaking off and getting into the oil ???

I'm sure if you get the right paint(don't know which one) and sandblast it, the paint will stay on.
My powdercoat has held up perfect for about 4000 miles so far.:O

Any kind of high temp, oil resistant paint should work as long as the plate is clean and dry before painting. Powdercoat would probably hold up better though. The cheapest (and most labor intensive) option would be to polish it. Wetsand it as smooth as you can with 400 grit, then 800, then 2000 and then start polishing. I like red Wenol as the first polish and after all of the haziness from the 2000 grit is gone, move to something less abrasive (I like Blue Magic). The beauty of polishing it is that it shouldn't oxidize too quickly since it will get an oil bath everytime the bike is running and keep a light coat of oil for awhile.

I have a Black Hinkle cover, and what I did was, I polished the stock pressure plate at first, and had chromed the bolts. Then I thought it would look good in black. So I painted the pressure plate with good spray paint, and then I wiped the paint off the center section and the fins. Looks like a star. Looks very good. Looks very cool when spinning. Then I bought the Retainers from my friend Van. Powdercoated the retainers Candy Blue, and chromed the new bolts and added a touch of black paint in the center. I also bought the Clutch Cover Ring from Van, and I must say a very nice part to customize. Makes the Clutch cover look that much better.I originally purchased a Blue Ring, but I chromed it along with the new allen bolts, and painted the cutouts where the screws sit gloss black. I never had any issues at all with the paint coming off. You only paint the face, not the back. I taped mine off. Tom Shuda 00TLR, 00GSXR1300, 99 ZRX1100, 86 Voyager XII
