Winter Project // Wheel upgrade

1010 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cyclecamper
Good day,

looking for opinion on Wheels upgrade: I am running Stock front end but the Forks are going for a Full tune up (spring and valves) this winter, rear is modified with R1 Shock.

Option 1 R1 or GSXr Wheels
Are they direct Bolt ON?? if not, How hard it is??
How much weight is saved??

Option 2 Aftermarket wheels
I know that I can get direct bolt on but the down side is the price.
Weight saving depend on Price...

Option 3??

I Guess my question is What is the Best Bang for the Buck???

Feel free to give me comment and feedback

I think the only direct bolt ons are the Gen-1 Busa wheels, but there is no advantages to the swap other than color. IMWO there is no point for you to do that if the current wheels are still good.

If you're really after an "upgrade" and have a little bit of money aside, PM speedking for an aftermarket.

Third option I heard on the other forum was to drill wholes on your OEM wheels to make them lighter. :lol

Je viens de passer qques jours a Quebec le mois dernier. Ca aurait ete genial de voir ta becane.
I've got Gixer 1000KZ4 wheels on mine. Same as the 'Busa I expect. These are the ones with the diamond shaped spokes rather than the rounded look on the originals. Slot straight in but I don't think they do a great deal on the weight front.

This is one of those areas where you have to ask yourself, "What's my motivation here?". If you want serious weight loss then it will cost. If you are just aiming to pretty things up a bit then perhaps less so. There are some nice examples where a bit of power-coating goes a long way to enhancing the look. However, unless you get lucky like Mr SinCityTLS who picked up a pair of Dymags on the cheap if I were you I'd be resigning myself to shedding a couple of thousand.

Not to thread jack, but how much work/fab was involved in the R1 rear shock mount? I've been searching on here and have ideas on what to try. Just curious how yours turned out?

That's a really affordable upgrade if you sell yours, and the next generation of wheels really is lighter than the stock TL wheels.
The rear wheels drop right in if you use the TL spacers & cush etc. If you sell yours that's a free upgrade.
I can't remember whether the front are supposed to have a spacer...I think they are supposed to but some people leave them not properly centered? I can't remember for sure.
Some SV1000 wheels are the same but a 5.5" rear instead of a 6", and the narrower rim actually handles better.
There's also chrome shops that sell the ones you want, and will buy your old ones.

For new wheels, the Carrozzeria I forged aluminum seem a good bang for the buck.
