In my office at work I have a lot of pics from my track days on the walls. I work in the satellite communication field and deal with a lot of different people. Some on a regular basis whiles others I see only once in a while. Most people who look at the pictures first ask “Is that you?”. I can deal with that one. It’s the second thing to come out that keeps getting me…

“I had a friend once who rode… He stopped when he got into a bad accident”

For over 16 years I’ve been riding. Many of those spent fighting Washington DC traffic while commuting ~25miles each way. I have my own stories to tell from unfortunate incidents in that time. Why the **** do they think I want to hear about theirs? And it’s not theirs, it’s a friend or relative that was involved.

Do they expect me to just give it up and ask for a ride home right there and then?

I don’t feel the need to tell about friends that have died in auto accidents when someone drives into work, why do I need to know about their brothers friends uncles second wifes step fathers third son from his forth marriage that was tragically killed when the kick starter flug him off the bike and down a gully.

Ah screw it… rant over. :banghead

I've heard all the stories too and thought I was a good rider untill I was sliding on my ass to the outside of the track. I have to say that it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, and it definately won't stop me from riding. It may slow me down a bit untill I get my confidence back though.

Is that you??....Cool well i once had a friend that rode untill he.........

Sorry i couldnt resist.I know what u mean..Next person that says that tell them u quit riding..Due to it being so dangerous out there and there story they just told you.. also tell them ur gonna need a ride home to caroline county and u take 495 to 95 south. The reason u take that way is because back roads are dangerous and this time of year there are more and more deer coming out and u rather be safe than sorry..What they say next should be priceless :laugh

I don't know what it is with people, but that seems the automatic reaction from most non-riders when they meet someone who rides.

My office environment is mostly old folks who like to golf, so I always tell them about a guy in the airforce who died from a golfing injury (club broke, splinter when though his eye and into his brain), then they shutup:)

Eh...I think mostly they are looking for some kind of connection with you...and if you don't ride then the only motorcycle connection they have is someone they knew who rode and usually the only thing they can remember is when something bad happened to them.

My favorite though is the "Oh my God, it looks like your knee is actually touching the ground!" :lol Then I have to explain why it doesn't hurt when my knee is on the ground. Now that I've finally about worn out a set of pucks I think I'll change them over the winter and hang one up on the wall next to my pics.

I have a MX jump pic as my desktop at work. When folks see it they first don't belive its me, then say its photoshopped, then say its not physically possible to survive such a thing:lol

(seriously, one of the analyst here worked it all out with lots of fancy math, seems I should be dead or at least broken. He failed to accout for the affect of the downslope.....)

Yea BP, if you landed on a flat surface maybe, but yea...gotta take into account the downslope. Now if only I could get the balls to hit the jumps hard enough to get enough air to travel far enough to hit the downslope! :coocoo

Burn, all you do is causually ask them if they ever talk on a cell phone while driving their car. When they say yes just tell them of all close calls you have had with drivers (of the much safer cages) who were not paying attention and almost: include near disaster here. Then tell them cages are way more dangerous than bikes and that when you are riding you cant be talking on the G-DAMN CELLPHONE! Put that in their pipe and let em smoke it.

Good points here - but did you see in the latest issue of Motorcyclist magazine...

The worlds first Blue Tooth Helmet. :banghead :banghead :banghead

My favorite statement to hate: It looks so uncomfortable all hunched over like that.

Ugh - All the cruiser bikes I've ridden over the past 5 years have my tailbone sreaming for mercy after 50 miles! :coocoo

I just give them all the same line..."Oh motorcycles never hurt anybody"

they get the classic "are you really that stupid or are you ****in with me?" look.

or when they give you the "my buddy crashed" story, I just say "he must not have been that good of a rider" but then again, I love pissing people off

Ahhh yes, when I get the "My buddy died in a motorcycle crash" I always like to feel this one out with "Was he wearing a helmet?" 90% of the time I get a quiet "no."

As for the hunched over thing I also get questions about my back. I point out that the seating position really keeps your back straight and you are pivoted at the point of the pelvis angle. I even have let a cruiser guy or two sit on the bike to see that their back doesn't bend to get into the position.

Now my neck on the other hand....from tilting it up and holding up that heavy helmet....that gets sore.

Imagine what I hear at work.

My reply. Yeah I figure the good LORD decided to keep me longer because I’m cursed or maybe just to irritate you. I mean I had my share of bad accidents. Thank GOD I’m still here but you have to get back on and not let it defeat you. Sometimes in a serious tone but I don’t mean it I say. I think my wife and kids would be better with out me. I'm worth more dead in the short run than alive. That normally starts them on another subject. “You are not right" How does you wife put up with you" ? My reply, Well I guess it's love but whatever it is, it seems to work because she does.

If she didn't, well that would be bad but I'll move to the Miami and and become rich doing porn. :lol

That really isn't what was bugging you today was it? It sounds like you had a tough day to begin with and that just happened to be the last straw at that moment.

Everyone hears that kind of stuff.

Take it easy Burn, you'll make it. :thumbup
