Hello all,

I have been reading the forum for a while and finally got a TLS and wanted to say hello to fellow riders and ask a couple of questions.

Firstly, here she is: I think I am going to name her the Cazador. Which is Spanish for hunter. A play on her color...

Land vehicle Vehicle Car Motor vehicle Motorcycle

I took all the fairings off to degrease her last night and found 2 small things, both which seem negligible.

First:

The radiator has an extra temp plug it looks like. My guess: The guy I bought it from said it was a 2000s TLR motor dropped in by a bike shop a few years ago. There is a port blocked off with black rubber gasket maker too on the back side of the cylinder, again a guess of a vacuum port. I am guessing the TLR have 2 temp wires and the TLS only has one.

Second:

Auto part Fuel line Engine Automotive fuel system Pipe

When I removed the fairing, I noticed that the intake wasn't connected to the underside of the airbox as the other side is. I think it is just a small plastic piece that was misplaced over time. It is sucking air from behind the motor rather than air being forced through the fairing air intake. Again, I am thinking not a big deal.

The only real final thing is only a rear cowl. My girlfriend wants to go for a ride, but I don't think that seat looks too comfy for her...

So today's goals:
Change oil, flush coolant, find rear seat on eBay / CL.

Just wanted to say hello. I love doing work on my stuff and can take pictures / post write ups / mainly find out how not to do things.

Hope all is well!!!

Eliott

Hi and welcome to the forum

Is that a 97/98 model bike?

on early ones the water temp sensor was in the rad and was always reading cold later models had it moved to the stat housing so it reads true water temp which allows the ecu to switch from cold map to hot map and run right :)
Welcome, looks a real tidy S.Keep an eye on the for sale section here as rear seats come up from time to time.

Hey Stu,

It is a 97 TLS but apparently has an early 2000s TLR engine. I don't know how exactly I could tell that but it definitely is not the motor that came in it.

The radiator has two what look like temp sensors. the one on my right leg side plugged in and the one on my left leg side that wasn't and still isn't plugged in.

I was able to change the oil and flush the coolant today. I think I'm going to bleed the brakes in the morning and then go get the tag and title when my temporary insurance card is issued.

Oil was a brown but the plug had no metal shavings and the coolant had some black rubber flakes in it from old rubber so I might get some new stuff and flush again in a couple weeks.

Am I right in assuming that I'm missing some sort of intake to air box piece from that image where the black tape is?

Thanks Mike! I will keep an eye out. I am planning on also adding some gel into the rear and front once I get the rear seat.

Side note:
Does the 97 TLS have an oil cooler? I don't have one, but think it might not be a bad addition.
Has it got the tlr heat exchanger
no need for a oil cooler if it has
and it allows easy fitting of a tlr exhaust system

What is a good chain cleaning procedure? I have Repsol for after, but I used a light orange degreaser and a toothbrush to try and agitate some grime out, but it still needs more.
Gaz,

It sure does have it. I thought that was what exactly what it did when I was draining the system, just wasn't exactly sure. What temperature should my fan kick on? I am thinking about adding a manual switch. Just put a new K&N filter on today and flushed the coolant, so I guess I am good to go!

It has an aftermarket Yoshi pipe on it, so maybe it has a TLR exhaust already. Not sure again how to check since this is my first TL. Can you tell from the first picture in the sun I took?
Tls system by the look of it both model have stainless system. But for some reason the lower tls system is painted black.
Cooling Fan should kick in at 105 c
just to quickly add
checked my fan the other day and it didnt kick in till 108 c was showing on the gauge...just incase you panic like i did when it didnt fire up at 105c:)

I think Corbin still do a seat for the TL,never tried one myself but a few on here reckon there pretty comfy, probably pretty expensive to.
Gaz and Smithie,

Thanks guys!
I had to convert to Fahrenheit. :p

I saw a mod to either swap in a lower kick on thermostat or relocate the current one. I am thinking about my next mods which I think I'm going to start with suspension. R1 rear shock and a steering dampener. Also maybe a new chain and sprocket.

I might look into that. Hopefully they make a reasonably priced rear seat. I got a pretty good deal on the bike so I am willing to spend a little on some upgrades. Suspension will probably be next. I am going to bleed the brakes today and take a look at the air filter.
Does anyone have any suggestions to clean up my idle? It seems "messy", bouncing around from 800 to 1500 rpms. Maybe like either the fuel filter is clogged or there is some gunk in the injectors? I am going to run Seafoam through it and do the external fuel filter mod soon. Anything else I should look into?

I bled the brakes (looked like coffee) and burped out all the air from the cooling system, but it still feel like one more piece of the puzzle is missing. The only known issues right now during service are the exhaust gasket leaks that leads to backfires, there is a small small oil leak somewhere, and the air filter needs to be replaced. It is the Suzuki logo air filter, so I am pretty sure it is from 1997.

I am eager to start really putting miles on her, but I want to make sure and really button her up beforehand. Thanks for any insight.
Hi nice bike. Looking at the pics you do have a tlr motor with the oil cooler on the oil filter,Also from the other pic you can see the temp sender unit on the thermostat housing so all is good there. I do recommend fitting a lower temp fan switch(Suzuki part 17680-50F10) from 221 to 208 farenheit (98 Celsius) in hot areas. Its mounted on the radiator lower rhs.
With the idle issue I recommend doing a TBS first.
Cheers Matt

Thanks Matt,

I like that idea. I figure the hotter the engine runs the more stress it is going through. I will look through some tutorials for the TBS. I have all the plastics off so I have good access to most places on the bike. I ordered a new K&N air filter that should be here the first of the week and got new plugs yesterday. I think after I mod the fuel filter to outside of the tank and do the TBS, she will be ready to rock. The brake fluid in there was so disgusting. I feel safer already.
I have a rear seat I don't use .
Tasi,

Would you be willing to sell it to me? I could PayPal you today. My girlfriend has already asked again about the seat. I have found them online but the price isn't great, so I haven't ordered anything yet. Thanks bud!
Can sell it but what area do you live in .If its the other side of the world freight coast might make it cheaper to get one closer to home .Remember i'm in Australia , home of the
short G.P.
