trouble starting

I'm having trouble starting my 98 TL1000R, I've had the battery on charge and still nothing. It was starting with a jump start, but only after being connected for a long period of time, but would then die off quickly. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Start with the basics. Plugs, filters (especially the fuel filter) etc.

So it will start (off a jump) but won't stay going?
Replace the spark plugs and then try it. Don't argue, don't tell me how new they are or that they are sparking just fine when you pull them out an dd look. Just replace them. :yes

You're sounding grumpier than usual, Jeff. Are you posting before you had your coffee? :laugh
That is correct, it does start off a jump but does not stay running. I will change the plugs and see how it goes

:laugh I don't drink coffee, it just wakes me up and then I have to pay attention to what goes on around me. :banghead :lol
Check the fuel filters. If it starts but dies there's a high probability that its not getting enough gas.
Yeah I don't think it'll be the fuel filter, it's dying as soon as I take the jumper pack off
its going to be

1) dead battery. bad enough to stop the reg working properly. remove it and get it charged and tested.
2) bad reg / rectifiier or the wiring on the plug to it
3) bad stator in the engine.

so.

get it running with jump pack and leave running.

put voltmeter across battery terminals and rev bike

voltage should be from 12 to rising to nearly 15v

value not critical just in the range

if yes then replace battery.

if no then

unplug stator

place 110v light bulb across any 2 white wires from stator.

rev engine . bulb should glow.

test all 3 wires. in pairs

if no replace stator

if all good then replace reg
