Trouble replacing TLR top triple tree

659 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Six5
Hey guys, I'm just in the process of installing Apex adjustable riser clip-ons on my TLR, everything has been going fine (just the usual minor headaches) but now I'm at the point of putting the triple tree back on and it will not go! Slides down fine until the fork tops are about 3/8" below the top of the triple tree, then stops dead and will not budge. Can take it off again no problem, and when I put it back on it sticks at exactly the same spot. What am I doing wrong ... ? :confused

Do you have the front end lifted? If not, that's the problem. The weight of the bike causes the bottom triple to flex slightly, and it throws off the alingment of the top of the forks relative to the stem.

Use a headstock lift on the front (not a fork lift), or a jack under the engine to relieve the pressure on the bottom triple, and the top will slide right on.
Cut the wires. Resolder and use heat shrink.

Err, I'm sure your answer is right somewhere but maybe not for installing a new top yoke.

Have a nice day.

EXACTLY! But might need a bigger one since it is a TLR!

Well, no fork lift handy but Six5 had it exactly right - I did finally figure it out. It was clear that the tree was catching on something, but I couldn't see anything to catch on - finally I realized that it was slipping down over the threads at the top of the stem but then catching where the threads end and the stem is just a touch wider. Once I figured that out, a few very gentle taps in the right direction with a rubber mallet got it past the obstruction, and then there was no problem. Definitely the "fork lift" would have made it easier from the start. Thanks for the advice guys (even the tip about cutting and heat shrinking the wires, which I'm sure will come in handy someday ... ;) )

My guess is that post was from a spammer. :banghead That's why it is no longer in the thread.

The moderators are on the ball. :devious
