TLR wont start

2324 Views 19 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  The Ring-In
Ok, started bike up yesterday and worked fine, went to start bike up today and it caught for a second or two and then died. Now wont start at all. It is turning over but wont catch. Initially I thought it might be flooded as there was a strong fuel smell but after leaving it for several hours before retrying ( no luck) I am thinking either spark or maybe dirty/blocked fuel filter as it sat around for a number of years before i purchased it.

Any ideas anyone?

Clean the plug's , probably fouled the plugs, my tls did this, once i'd cleaned the plug's all was fine.
just bin the plugs and fit NEW ones.

run it till its warm before shutting it down they dont like short start ups
Cheers i will get some new plugs tomorrow and see if it helps. Better to use the iridium NGK type or standard NGK?
iridium is cr8eix for S

cr9eix for R
Greendog,

Hey bro, im having the same problem with mine. I pulled the pciii, gipro....installed new plugs and still no start. when it did start i had to stay on the throttle for a bit until it warmed up then it ran fine. going to do some more investigating tonite after work. will relay in thing positive back to you.

have you checked the tps?
maybe a throttle body synch is in order?
have you done the plus mod ?
Fuel pressure regulator.........verify proper operation. It can cause hard start, fouled plugs and just plain flat out shitty running when defective.
Tps is Fine, sync is good also.
so far, all tests eliminate electrical components. this is a mechanical issue. no codes at all in dealer mode and all components have passed actual testing and inspection
one other thing,

thanks for the input but guessing what it is doesnt help. If you have real world advise from past experience, please post. Thanks to all, past, present and future.
Greendog my fellow TLr',

This you may not want to hear but hear it is. After my late night scavenger hunt around 3 this morning, I found that my fuel pressure reg is good. timing is good.........valves are not seating all the way. No sealed environment for combustion to occur, no start. I found this out by fluke instance. Cranked the bike by accident, after revolution cycle ended maybe a half of second, heard the air poof back out thru the throttle body, not the exhaust. Do a compression test and see what you get. Let me know what you find.
Do a compression test and see what you get
engine has decompressors

you need to lock these to do a compression test
heard the air poof back out thru the throttle body,
this is inconclusive.

if the motor bounces back off top dead centre it will do this
TLR manual says nothing about a decompression for the cylinders or locking any kind of ring. TLr Not TLs. I know my problem with my motor thru diagnosis. Im relaying good starting points for him.
The Ring In,

Correct me if im wrong, but are the TLR' & TLS' motors different? They both have different service manuals.
thanks mate, will have a look
I pm you, check your in box bro.
TLR manual says nothing about a decompression for the cylinders or locking any kind of ring
the exhaust cam has a centrifugal decompressor.

you need to lock it off to get a comp gauge to work.

S and R motors are not THAT different.
