Tl1000R overheating

hi there, i have a 1999-2000 tlr that seems to overheat a lot, when im riding it, it is fine and stays around 83 degrees, but when im stopped at lights or waiting the temp goes up and up, the two cooling fans come on at around 97 degrees for around 10-20 seconds then stop and the temp continues to climb.
if i turn it off to let it cool it spits out some coolant through the breather pipe, if i take it out for a spin for a while it comes back down to 83 degrees and then i can turn it off ok.

anyone else have this problem? is it common? does anyone have any suggestions that may help?

Hmmmm....like this? http://www.tlzone.net/forums/help-forum/122763-cooling-fans-turning-off-too-quickly.html

I have changed the rad sensor, the fans and the ecu with no change.
I have just changed the other temp sensor at the thermostat but I have not put it back together yet to test it....hopefully next week I will have time to do that.
that is a strange one! could it be a thermostat fault? (not opening) let me know if that works when you test it yeah, but thats very interesting.

cheers, dave
I have a manual switch on mine too which I flick on when gonna be stuck for a bit worth sticking one on once you sort your problem out
So do your fans just turn off once and never come back on?
faulty temp switch in the radiator.

bridge the wires to check
I'm with The Ring-in on this one.

Manually force the fans to run by bridging the connector that plugs into the thermo-switch.

If they stay running, then the thermo-switch is faulty.
If they stop running, then there is a section in the fan circuit that is opening up as the fan current causes the wiring and connectors to heat up.

The fan current runs through the 10 amp Ignition Fuse (#3 in the box) and the Large White gang connector. Check those items as well. Look at not only the fuse, but also the terminals the fuse plugs into.
Yep. Sounds like it's strictly a problem with the fan circuit or fan thermostat mounts in the radiator). You can get fan thermostats that turn on at a lower temp.
Have you try bleeding the system you may have a air pocket in your cooling system. You could have a thermostat that is sticking, pill it out and place it in a pot of boiling water to see how far it open and how long it take to close when you take it out, also if it close fully. I would lean toward air in your system.
thanks for all the ideas guys, will try them all one at a time and hopefully solve the problem, will post when i find the fault.

cheers, dave
no the fans cut in and out as expected but just wont stay on long enough to do any good, they will come on at 97 degrees for about 10-20 seconds and then again about a minute later and so on but temp keeps rising

OK, we have the same problem then. :banghead
Mine should be back together tomorrow. I will let you know what happens.
Good luck with your problem. Hope you get it sorted out. So you can get back to riding.
Ok. I cahnged the sensor in the thermostat housing, No difference.
I then changed the one in the lower rad (again). No difference.

This has got me stumped! Any ideas??

Snailspace, The themostat housing sensor will have no effect on the activity of the fans. Just FYI.

What happened when you shorted the terminals in the plug that connects to the radiator sensor? Did the fans stay on? How long did you run them?

If I short the terminals in the plug to the lower rad sensor the fans do not come on.

Interestingly, I had the fans bolted to the rad and they stayed on for 14 seconds the first time, then the temp rose and they stayed on for 18 seconds the 2nd time. I then took the RH fan off the rad and held it in my had it went on and stayed on for 2 minutes.....turned off when the bike got down to 221 (I had a house fan in front of the bike cooling it off).
Its the thermostat not opening

the fans come on and cool the rad and the fans go off.

the water in the engine is measured at the thermostat which is shut and the temp continues to rise.

good time to put in an SV thermostat . slightly higher temp so better for the ecu to keep on the run map.
It might be Stu....but that does not explain why my fans turned off after just 14 seconds, then waited a minute, then went back on for 18 seconds....The temp was still over what it should have been the whole time. The fans should never have turned off. :banghead
pay attention!

there will be a questionaire afterwards :laugh

the fans cool the radiator. the fans are switched by the radiator sensor.........

the engine temp is at the engine

if the stat is stuck only the rad is cooled

the temp is reported from the stat.......

now which part of pay attention should I repeat :lol

Good call on analyzing the problem Stu. :thumbup

Now, SnailsPace or Davidtlr1 needs to replace his thermostat to verify the fix. :eatcorn
