Tank supports?

532 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cyclecamper
My 97 TLS has two brackets at the transition between the frame and sub frame just below the rear of the tank in front of the tank hinge. Are these supposed to be there? Reason I ask is that one has a rubber block cushion attached the other doesn't. Went a looking on the old fiche and couldn't find any sign of them on the V model. Looked at a later model and there they were .... I haven't thought this through yet but am I supposed to have them? If so, I need to buy a new cushion to replace the missing one.

There should also be 2 mid way up the tank that lip on the edge and rest on the flat bit underneath. look you'll see where.

Thanks guys. I have the ones on the underside of the tank on the lip ... They're ok. It's just the bottom n/s frame block that's missing. I presume they are there to eliminate tank rock.
On the '97 TLS the rear supports by the hinge were part of the recall that did the tank replacement. The left one makes my R1 shock mount a little crooked too, dammit.

That actually explains a lot. Thank you for that piece of info. :thumbup

Why? When you fitted your R1 shock, did trim/grind both sides of the lower bush to fit into the swing arm lugs? I just did the right side (when viewed from the rear) which moves the shock over a little. The casting on the top eye of the shock ran a little to close for my liking to the inside curve of the left rear tank support bracket, so l filed the bolt hole for the mounting point, slightly oval to slide the mount forward to gain better clearance. Just 3 or 4 mm.
My R1 shock didn't need any trimming at all, it fit the swingarm perfectly. At the top it looked OK shimmed full-left, then I realized I didn't have the tank support installed. And then the tank support interfered with the shock clevis a bit so I had to grind a flat on a washer and add that too!

I guess I could try to trim the shock eyes at one or even both ends, to make it perfectly straight; it would be good to not have any side forces on the swingarm or frame or mount. Then again, it's only crooked a teensie bit, about the amount of one piece of steel and one washer.
