Taking a trip to New York in January

My wife and I are going to take a few days out in New York in January. I've not been before so will probably just stick to the Manhattan district. Seems to have enough for a few days.*Anyone been before give me any tips? Presumably is safe enough during the day but will have the usual problems as any big city does (pick pockets etc).I was thinking of hiding a car and doing having a look at OCC. Looks like a pretty straight forward drive up to me. Is it?
