On your 97 though, you need to check if the temp fix has been done: on that first year model the temp sensor was in the radiator and gives a false indication of the actual temperature. That can cause real running problems due to which map the ECM selects. Check out this fix in the frequent mods forum

If it's running in the 185-195 range while at speed, the fix may already have been done. Temp will always climb when idling or in stop n go traffic however
