R swinger on S question

717 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  cyclecamper
I have my R swinger mounted on my S frame almost ready fro welding the suspension tabs

the question I cant seem to find the answer to is I know you have to have the oil seal on the left hand side of the swinger but does this includes the metal washer/spacer too? :O

set it up with all the bits the way it would be in an R frame.

tighten the engine bolts

tighten the swingarm pivot till the swinger has no side play.

tighten the lock ring

tighten the nut on the LHS.

check the arm moves freely.
The stock s has a flat-milled washer and seal at each end, but the washer is often stuck inside the old seal when you throw it out.
Yup I know the steel washer gets stuck in there..... Mine doesn't though it's well greased :laugh

So do I need the metal washer in too or is it just the seal?
I have to admit that I don't know because I've never done the conversion. But I have had both the TLR and TLS swingarm pivots apart.

The TLR seals and pivot shaft appear to be pretty specific to the adjustable eccentric carrier that only the TLR has. It also has double bearings on the chain side and a specific spacer between bearings and another specific spacer on the non-chain side. So yes, like Ring-In says, you probably have to assemble the bearings and middle spacer like the TLR.

The TLS swingarm pivot tube has each end turned down to fit the TLS seals. Those TLS seals are each meant to work with thrust washer 08211-25481. Will the TLS seal even fit the TLR swingarm end?

You don't have the adjustable-offset carrier on the TLS. So I assume you'd use the TLS pivot shaft. Didn't you have to cut some of the TLS frame?

The TLR fiche doesn't show any seal or thrust washer on the chain side, just 2 bearings against the adjustable-offset carrier. I suppose on the transplant I'd want a thrust washer and seal, but I don't know whether the TLS seal will even fit the TLR without some fancy machining of the swingarm pivot tube end. I imagine most people just set it up like a TLR without any thrust washer or seal. Are the TLS chain-side bearings sealed or open?? I can't remember...

On the non-chain brake side it looks like you can just use the TLR bearing then the TLR seal 09283-30053 and external spacer 61251-02FA0.

Just make sure you check the chain alignment as you go. I'm not much help, and someone who's done it might answer the specifics better about the chain side.

I assume you use the TLS pivot shaft and nuts & washers. I'd sure as hell use thrust washers rather than bend the frame in very much to tighten.

Good luck.

Maybe this will shed a little light cyclecamper http://home.comcast.net/~herzingkplus4/swing_swap_3.htm

The arm is a straight fitment to the S frame the only cutting/modding to the frame is a suspension mount to allow travel

in the link above it just says use a seal from the S arm! no mention of the thrust washer! and as you say they are usually stuck together so was wondering if I need the thrust washer in there or not

I havent checked out the fitch or manual for the R arm yet that is my next step seen as though I have just got in from work

Its a bit hard to check alignment when theres no engine in the frame :laugh
So Now I have had chance to look up the fich/manual for the R the R swinger has an oil seal on the left hand side which is 30x40x6

So really If I use the seal from the S arm it will have to be 6mm thick? or I could just buy a seal off an R!!
Hmm I guess this is where I saw it: you only have to cut the frame for some single-sided arms.
Oh I got the right and left backwards when I was looking at the fiche. still, there's a seal 09283-30053 on only one side, and it's not clear whether it seals against the spacer 61251-02FA0
