Problems shifting into 2 at high rpm

519 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Six5
Hi there I just recently had my tl1000s engine rebuilt 5000 miles ago. Ever since then (and possibly before) I have a hard time shifting into second gear at high RPMs. The shifter will move and then feel like it hits a wall and shift into neutral from first. Also when it does shift into second it is very common that I can feel the gears grinding in the shifter lever as it is transitioning from first to second. Also after the bike warms up it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find neutral at a stop. I've switched to a full synthetic oil about 1500 mile ago and the problem is still there. Please help.

Shift forks just replaced and the clutch is engaged. It doesn't have this problem between any other gears or during downshifting
Have you inspected the shift drum star and the detent arm & spring? I don't know enough to say it is the cause, but it is a good place to start whenever shifting problems arise.

Edit: After giving it some more thought..... Since it has always shifted this way since the rebuild (and possibly before), could it be the dogs on "2nd gear" are buggered and it wasn't inspected properly at the time when it was apart? Or can a spacer or shim be in the wrong location? Or missing? :O

An expert will be along shortly.....:laugh
The shift forks are all new however the same clutch pack was reused. Could this be caused by a dragging clutch?
Had a problem like that many years ago and it was the rod linkage from the shifter to the shifter arm by the foot peg. Could be your clutch leaver is not disengaging the clutch because your bushing in the leaver the round brass bushing which the end of the plunger sits in is starting to wear out.
Would you have pictures or diagrams I could look at. Is this something I can fix on my own or would I need someone to split the case?

I doubt the clutch is the is the problem. Otherwise, you should be having problems with the other gear transitions also - not just 1st to 2nd.

The shift rod linkage Pat Man is referring to is external and easy to access and adjust. However, if the problem is internal, then, yes, the engine will need to be removed and the cases split.

Before you worry about that, here is something you can investigate yourself. Even though your symptoms don't quite fit the problem described in this link, it is still good information to know, and it will help you understand the shifting mechanism better.
