Power Comander III question

5437 Views 20 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Dudz
Ok....I have just bought a PCIII for my TLS. I have had a quick look through the manual ( I'm better hands on ) . Can I connect my computer to the PCIII when on the bike to look at the standard map the ECU has ? just to compare "before and after" ??

You can connect to the PC3 but you can't use it to look at the ECU maps. Only the PC3, maps.

Good idea to take a backup of the maps, never know when the critter will go faulty!
the power commander 3 does not change the ECU map in any way .

it changes the outputs to the injectors .
ah ha....that explains it. thx
I'm sure this question has been asked a dozen times before, just cant find it...... I have the French 2000 model TLS. Ive done the airbox mod /TRE /PCIII but would the performance be improved if I swap the ECU for a 97 ??
no

once you fit a power commander this overrides any fuelling map thats in the ECU

once you get it custom mapped you wont get it any better with a different ECU
Right...Thanks Stu :)

This isn't always true. The power commander can only modify the amount of time the injectors are open. If you have a restricted ECU that pulls ignition timing for example, a different ecu from a non restricted market can bring more power. I have no idea though if this is the case with the French ECU's..
I plan to get a custom map done this summer. Until then, I am playing around with generic maps from the PCIII CD.

I have done the airbox mod / K&N filter / Aftermarket slip on cans / Standard header pipes / G-pack and PCIII (2000 bike). I have the Map MC301-702 uploaded.
Please can anyone give me a map to try that might be slightly better than the ones on the CD ? ... I tried downloading some from the PCIII USB database but nothing happens when I execute the file "M301-ALL" (with or without the PCIII connected to the bike and PC)

first I have heard of this?

but then wouldn't a TRE stop the ECU from retarding the ignition anyway? so an easy way round?

If the ignition limits are programmed to react in 5th or 6th gear (usually as a top speed limiter) in the "restricted" ECMs, then a TRE would have no effect.
Just played around with the MC301-702 map from rev ranges between 1750 and 3000rpm. Took all of the minus numbers out in this range and replaced with between 1 and 3 to what I understood as logical. As I have the airbox mod done. This area seemed a little flat both in the map and riding the bike.
Wow.... What a difference that made ! :devious...
It pulls 200% better from 1750rpm now. Leaps forward at 2000rpm. I know a custom map is whats needed, but this has already been a vast improvement.

Dudz,

Can you PM me or post the fuel map changes at each level? Even just a print screen of the map values. I want to graph it as well as probably hijack it since we have very similar mods. :devious

Perfect Dudz. Can you post the bottom half too above 5000 rpm? I should be able to knock out a graphical representation pretty quickly...
Dudz,

Hack job and I know I missed a couple data points on entry ( a few afternoon beers will do that! :cheers ). Requires a cutting edge browser. Chrome works, others haven't caught on yet.:

http://bondintel.com/threeD/?map=dudz

I bet when the Dyno tune comes in they will smooth out some of those big fueling jumps. Make sure and get that data for me please kind sir!
Really don't understand that ?. using chrome. Maybe I do... keeps moving :laugh
The vertical axis is throttle positions ( 0 - 100% in 10% increments). The horizontal access is the RPM levels ( 0 to 10500 in 500 rpm increments). Shows the increase in fuel across the map (height of bar is increase in fuel over standard).

Stopped the rotation, so you can see it a bit better.
Got a Custom map done at a PC Center / 2 days ago. Traveled 360Kms in a flippin monsoon to get there (closest dyno center) .

First thing I noticed is that is sounds very different than before. It purrs rather than thumps :)

Low revs are alot smoother.
I seemed to have trouble getting the bike above 6000 revs in 4+ gear before, seemed like it wanted full throttle to get there. Now 6000 is easy, and I have to change through the gears quicker (obviously quicker acceleration) 43T on the rear sprocket before and after custom map.
Only problem I can find, (if it is one) is that around 4000 revs in 3rd gear it has a small flat spot, then quickly goes past that with a little more throttle. I haven't cained it yet, waiting for my leather gear to dry out :devious

I actually thought the bike was running sweat before, but compared to after, how wrong I was !
