Just been in the garage fitting new bits to my tls while over the tank there is a strong smell of petrol, bike has hardly any fuel in it and its been stood for about 2 1/2 months now, bike has covered 16000 miles, i cant see any leaks just smell fuel quite strong above the tank, cant see any leaks could this be the fuel pump leaking that ive been hearing of and dreading? where exactly does it usually leak from?

any advice is greatly appreciated guys

Yep, could be the beginnings of a fuel pump leak.Dont know how bad the tls' get but nearly all tlrs leak eventually.
If you lift the tank and get a close look around where the pump bolts on you should be able to see any leeks or even dirt gathering if its only seeping.
Its not a major job just be careful not to strip the bolts or damage the sealing flange on tank.If you feel adventurous do external fuel filter mod to save work when changing it next time.

it's either leaking from the fuel pump gasket, or just venting.

If it has been sitting for 2.5 months and it has been leaking you should see some residue under the tank on the left hand side (as you sit on it) from near the oval area where the fuel pump is bolted in.
