Newbie Help

446 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  cyclecamper
Hello all,

I'm new here and new to TL's. Just bought myself a TLs that needs a little help. It currently won't start, i'm guessing the coils may be no good or i've read that they have a lot of problems with the connections to do with the starter motor.

Anyway i wondered if anyone knows where i can download a workshop manual so i can check the coils resistance, valves clearances etc.

Many thanks and hello.

welcome to TL.
check ebay.co.uk or other ebay. they are plenty paper and cd manuals
start with NEW plugs

its a TL thing

don't reason....

don't argue.....

just do it................

:cheers
:stupid

Yep, what Stu said. Don't argue, don't try to figure it out it, just put in the new plugs. :yes
You need to have a known starting point with new plugs anyway, even if that's not the only problem.

Then you need to do a better job of describing the symptoms exactly. The exact sequence or what you do & what occurs...in neutral? Sidestand position? Clutch lever squeezed? Run/kill switch set to run? Headlight bright? What does the odometer display say? Any codes in dealer mode? Key position...do you hear the fuel pump prime? Push start button...Does starter crank the engine? Any sputter like it's firing at all? Any smell of fuel? If you look down the throttle bodies do you see fuel being injected? If you dribble in a bit of fuel or spray some ether or starting fluid does it fire up & run for a second? If you test spark from the high voltage lead on an external new grounded-body spark plug in shade or dark room do you see spark at the plug? For both cyls? Do you know any history? When did it run last, was it stored & how long? What happened to it since it last ran? How old is battery, and is it fully charged? Did you try jumping it? What's the voltage on the switched power line while cranking? How old is the fuel? How old is the battery? Does the headlight dim a lot while cranking?

I think we may get a reply in a month when he's tried all of those, :lol

All good advice. It could be any if the above. :rolleyes
Thanks for the replies. :)

She's up and running. A clean of all connectors, cleaned the spark plugs and coil connectors, then a good charge in the battery and she fired up.

I think the previous owner (who only had it for 6 weeks) was a little simple and impatient.
I'll sort out some new iridium plugs, and look at the R/R as the charge going back to the battery seams a little low, then she should be nice and reliable.

Just glad it's running so I can listen to that V twin.

I found a manual here in the end too:

Lookat the ultimate charging mod thread. Converting to one of the high-amperage Shindengen FET regulator/rectifiers using the plugs from Eastern Beaver really makes an improvement.
