Clean-up begins after severe storm in WA

SES volunteers are cleaning up in the wake of a severe storm which hit Western Australia's south coast.
Crews answered more than 120 calls in the town of Esperance overnight, helping people with flooded homes and no power. More than 1,000 homes lost power, roofs were torn off and trees came down.

Winds reached up to 110 kilometres an hour and rain caused flash flooding. The town has been soaked in more than 185 mm of rain since 9am Wednesday.

The south coast highway was closed off, making it difficult to get extra help to the region.

The storm was intensified by the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Isobel, which combined with a surface trough to form a deep low pressure system.

Residents have been told the worst of the storm is over with the low weakening and moving out to sea.
