I was also thinking about 6V lamps being installed but it would be a little unusual unless maddi has bought a job lot and keeps putting them in when they pop.
6V bulbs aren't that common here outside of specialist auto shops so they are not something you just pick up at your local filling station.

I'm assuming those readings were taken across the battery rather than in one of the brake lamp sockets otherwise they should be 0V before the pedal is pressed and 12ish afterwards.

And since the brake/tail light bulbs are combined if it was 6V bulbs in there the tail lamps would be popping too.

I agree on the brake light voltage behavior.

However, if the readings were taken across the battery, as you suspect, then seeing 10.6V after the activation of the brake light is bad news.

Yep. :yeahright

We just need more detailed descriptions from the OP concerning his methods and measurements.

Yes they were new bulbs. Just checked the packet.........6 volt bulbs I picked them up in the motorbike section of Halford never looked at them just presumed they would be right!
All voltage reading I talked about were read from the bulb housing not the battery

So it was the "simple" solution in the end. Still surprising. I haven't seen a bike with 6V electrics for years and I've never noticed 6V bulbs in Halfords.

I know that's why I just presumed they were 12v. I'll take a picture tomorrow and show just to prove I'm not messing!
