Hydro Lock.......

568 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  87sleepr
Im assuming the head gasket failed because of coolant sitting in the tips of my mufflers:banghead.....couple experience questions, open to thoughts.

1) Should you use new head studs when replacing the head gaskets?
2) whats the likely hood of bent rods from it locking up at around 3k rpm or less?
3) If it was just the head gasket should i also replace the bottom cylinder gasket as well?

Just looking for some answers

How could it hydro-lock at 3000 rpm? :confused It couldn't fill the cylinder that quickly.

More likely that something else broke.....then punched a hole in the water jacket.....then pushed some coolant through the exhaust......then eventually locked up.

This is just a guess. Wait for the experts to reply......
No clue, man. Just a thought my buddy threw out there. I was riding it and it started to sputter a bit,ran find, sputter some more then run and I felt it start to lock up and pulled the clutch in and it died. Couldnt have been going but 45 at this point. I had just pulled out from a parking lot.

Or was it simply running out of gas from a failed fuel pump? Or an electrical failure?

Does it act normal when you key on? Lights OK? Fuel pump primes?

So then, at this point is it still locked up? The engine will not turn over?

Have you performed any inspection yet? Try to turn it by hand? Remove the valve covers?
No it spit coolant out the pipes. Fuel pump primes, its throwing an error code that i have not pulled yet. The starter wont even turn the motor right now. Im going to pull the spark plug and see what happens here in about an hour. i will turn it over by hand first once i pull the plug and see what happens. if it turns smooth i might be a little more at ease lol
I reckon its dropped a valve and punched a hole somewhere
ok verdict......rear head HAS to come off now, i think the piston is jamed up on the spark plug of something. The plug just snapped off in the head and i know i didnt do more than a 1/4 turn after tight. c00 is whats on the dash. I can only hand turn it about 1/2 rotation. I see some fluid trails down the front header. Gonna put her back together and wait for uncle sam to send my check this way and invest in another motor and swap and build the old one piece by piece.
