Start by pulling apart the connector from the switch pod to the loom and cleaning it up. Next step is dismantling the switch pod and giving the insides a good clean. There are a couple of large connectors inside the fairings behind the headlights. Pull those apart and clean them up/check for corrosion etc. Once its all back together let us know if there's any improvement. This is all nice simple stuff. Doesn't need a shop. I figure if you can ride the bike then you are highly evolved enough to be able to follow a few wires and clean up some connectors.
Has your machine had any mods done to the lights or is it still stock?
BTW places like Maplins/ Robert Dyas and other hardware DIY shops sell kits of tools that look like dentist's picks. These are very good for getting crud out of electrical connectors. Maplins also sells contact cleaner.
And once you've done with cleaning the connectors you can grab one of the picks, find a bottle of oil of cloves then go up to one of you mates and say "Is it safe?" If he's ever seen "Marathon Man" he'll crap himself.
