Anyone know what gauge wire and fuse size I need to extend my optimate hardwired cable?

In work at the moment so can't look:)

Cheers

stu, I want to extend the actual cable that you hardwire to the battery on the bike, I want to relocate the little charging socket/plug on the bike but the supplied wire is too short, the pos wire also has an inline fuse in it IIRC but I don't know the amps of it.......

Rich
... aren't you supposed to charge batteries at 10% the rated value of the battery? So a 6amp battery would be less then an amp.
I'd stick a 5 amp in there so I could use the lead for other things like phone charger (you'd need the adapter obviously).
Cable rated at 5amp+ should be fine.

Ah right I'm with ya

to be honest the wire is only thin and I think the fuse is 10 amp

I had the first model of the oxford charger I hope they have upped their game a bit as the one I had went tits up and killed the battery
Stu
I have both and not had any problems at all
Bother batteries are now well over 2 years old

:)
good to hear and hopefully it was just mine or should that be unfortunately :laugh
:lol side stands and batteries
Seriously tho these new chargers are great.
It watches the voltage and only then it will boost it till it feels like its charged and just monitor's it.
Fast charge for starting a flat battery.
Expensive but worth it. :thumbup
same as the optmate then :laugh

gotta agree that these sorts of chargers are great although the optimate wont do a car battery or thats what they say on the box anyway

I charged my car battery but it did take days rather then hours and the optimate was nice and warm by the end.
worth remembering that optimate type chargers should NOT be used with lithium ion batteries.
And what are ballistic 8 cell battery' s
Then Geoff
:laugh

After 2 years no problems.

No special charger required.

did you read the document about charging? it actually repeats what I said. ; )
I must confess to having charged my Li battery with my optimate on one occasion. I figured if the battery can stand up to the charging system on the tiller the optimate would be unlikely to kill it.
So far no ill effects. The nice thing about the Li battery is I don't have to charge the bike regularly in the first place, even with lots of short winter trips in the dark with main beams on. Used to have to do it once a week.

Exactly SNOWBLiND :thumbup

Any fool can buy a purpose charger If YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY STUPID MONEY.

The 8 Cell EVO2 is our most popular battery by a large margin simply because it fits the most vehicles in the powersports world. The 8 Cell EVO2 will work with everything from 450cc MX bikes to 1000cc multi-cylinder motorcycles. This battery is robust, impact resistant, water resistant, and has more starting punch than 90% of all the powersports lead-acid batteries available. Most motorcycles in this range use an OEM battery that weighs up to 11lbs. The 8 Cell EVO2 batteries weigh 1.7lbs. That is a weight savings of more than 9lbs for less than $170! If your powersports vehicle has modified motor, additional electrical accessories, or operates in extreme conditions then we would recommend upgrading to the 12 Cell EVO2 for added durability. THERE IS NO SPECIAL CHARGER REQUIRED but periodic balance charging the 8 Cell EVO2 with our*Ballistic Performance Components BMS charger*will greatly extend the life of the battery.

:stupid

Let's face it. If the battery is designed to survive in a bike with a charging system designed 15 years ago it isn't going to need anything too special.
I know the dedicated chargers will probably extend the working life and they do all sorts of clever things that aren't required for lead/acid like cell balancing but considering the crap its having to put up with in day-to-day operation (like starting from cold in freezing temperatures) it can just live with my trusty old optimate.

I may invest in a proper item one day but its going to have to wait until after Xmas. :tongue
