Drastic surge at 3000rpm

Hello, this is my 1st post. I have owned a green TL1000S since 99 and have done all my own services ,upgrades and repairs. This problem however is with a friends 97. He hasn't dropped it off yet so I kind of want to get a little insight on what it may be before I tear into it. The bike starts and runs fine except for a drastic surge in power at 3000rpm Its actually dangerous to ride. This happens at very small throttle openings. If you have it in neutral and just slowly open the throttle as soon as the revs hit 3000 it just acts like you twisted the throttle open. I will be checking the TPS, valves and TB synch again as I've looked at this bike a few years ago when it first started acting up. It was'nt to bad back then but is getting worse. It almost seems electronic in nature, like maybe an ign advance issue. Anyone here ever hear of this before.

Welcome to the Zone Keith! :)

Three things come to mind:

Bad TPS. Since you say the symptom is getting worse, my guess is that a bad spot is developing in the arc of the trottle position sensor. It is feeding bad data to the ECM. As a consequence the ECM makes an abrupt adjustment in the fuel delivery which you feel as a surge.

Coolant sensor mod on a '97. Has the coolant sensor been relocated from the radiator to the thermostat housing on this '97? If not, the ECM will stay on the "cold" map much longer than it should. If you live in a colder climate it may never get on the the "warm" map. This will accentuate the poor fueling in the lower rev range.

Swap ECMs to test for timing issue. This is not likely the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to try it while you have the two '97s together. Do they have the same ECM numbers?

Let us know what you find.
