Is there any special steps I should take before I start to tear into this motor I plan on doing a complete rebuild because of first gear being out.... I did take off clutch housing and have found chung's so I am almost 100 that it's the gears them self all other gears work great and someone already welded the basket parts... Thanks for any help offered

Read the manual and follow the instructions. Clean all the parts and keep them organised. And keep a clean workspace! Where are you based?

Also what would be pros and cons to sv1000 swap
SV swap? Crank? Full motor?

What I mean is can I just tear it down since it is a complete rebuild don't have to worry about marking timing cause I'll have to retime after build I have the manual..... and what i mean about sv swap is swapping the motor from sv1000 to tl1000r

Have you got a manual? provided you have a manual there is no need to mark anything, as the manual will explain in detail.

Why would you want to put an sv motor in a TL? The SV is less powerful than the TL motor despite the SVs bigger tbs. The mounting positions are different anyway.

When you're doing a full rebuild put in new bearings, gaskets, oil pump etc. Comes to about £400 in parts. Its well worth refreshing everything possible whilst the engines apart so you know that you wont be having to dismantle it again in the near future.

As Crash says, the SV motor isn't a straight drop-in. Plus it's detuned relative to the TL lump. Still a decent motor mind you but nothing to be gained by sticking it into a TL chassis. You'd be better off taking a stock SV, putting better suspension on it and fitting some hotter cams.

Of course Crash is a bit smug in this respect since he owns a TL/Ducati hybrid. Git. :)

This.

I've found that cleaning the parts first, then storing them in ziplock bags according to component for later assembly makes life so much easier. You can literally toss the parts anywhere, for any amount of time, and they stay clean and organized. Also makes reassembly so much faster.
