Clutch Adjustment issue?

3805 Views 34 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Tortugatron
Hey everyone,

I've done some homework regarding my issue. Problem is when I ride for a while (10-20miles on highway) and pull off to exit its hard to shift into neutral when coming to stop at a parking lot, or for gas. Its only been doing this really bad for the last week or so. I had the clutch cable adjust about 600miles ago when I had a new chain and sprockets installed.

So should I:

A) adjust the screw at the clutch lever to engage the clutch more and remove play.

or

B) Do a full adjustment per the manual.

The later seems a little overkill since I the clutch was set up less than 1,000miles ago. But is it advisable to just adjust at the lever?

Not a big job to adjust as per manual.

How is your oil level, and when was it changed? when you do lots of short trips the oil level can rise, cos fuel gets past the rings into the oil, and doesn't evaporate because the oil doesn't get hot enough (water temp. isn't oil temp) resulting in thin oil that smells of gas when you change it. I don't know if this would cause your problem, but I'm sure it wouldn't help:O
I ride about 10+ miles to work and back (20miles or so round trip) several times a week. The oil was changed in the 2nd week of December, so I've put maybe 1,100 miles in this oil. I thought the oil as well, but I noticed that before I started messing with the clutch lever adjusting screw that it there wasn't much movement of the lever before it hits the grip. I twisted it out a few threads and it feels like the clutch is pulled further as I can easier engage neutral while standing in first.

To test this theory, I backed the screw back in and engaged neutral and it wanted to roll. Does this sound like dragging clutch? Sorry for all the basic questions, but I'm trying to educate myself to do more of the work myself.
Adjust the worm drive screw just in front if the front sprocket,
Take the cover off,
Check condition of worm drive,
If it looks ok,
Loosen lock nut,
Turn in centre bolt untill you feel pressure,
Back it off about a half to 3/4 turn,
do up lock nut
Go for a test ride.
Adjusting it at the lever only won't sort out the pushrod if the worm drive is out of adjustment or worn out.
You can adjust the worm screw and locknut assembly without having to adjust everything?

Yes, get that set up first, also check your cable is running nice a free, lube it or fit a new one, I thought my clutch was fried untill I checked the cable, it was as stiff as a stiff thing to move, New cable, set worm drive and all lovely again.
I'll have to give it a run tomorrow. I adjusted the worm screw and it feels like it engages more. But I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't like the rock concert at 1am.

Thank you sir, yes I consulted my manual before doing the work and it was back out 1/4 turn when tension was felt. The clutch lever does feel better in hand, but I won't get a chance to to test it until the downpour stops.

You're lucky, over here our downpour started last October, :banghead.
That's what we need. California is so in the crapper as far as water shortage goes. I don't mind not riding in the downpour because we need it more than I need to ride. I'll update when I get a chance to test everything.
We need the rain. California is up shit creek in regards to the drought.
Alright, well I pulled the worm adjuster out and made sure everything was clean. But putting everything back together.....:eek:mg; what did I get into?!?!?! I am reading the instructions per the manual, but everything doesn't seem to work anywhere NEAR as well as it did before. I feel like I just cannot get the clutch to have the proper amount of freeplay and grab as it did before all this started. Is there any specific way the worm adjuster is supposed to slide back together? I have everything in pieces in my tool box right now.
Take some pictures of what youve taken of the bike.. Easier to tell whats wrong..
I'll take photos tomorrow morning. Essentially I pulled the worm adjuster off, and screwed the bottom clutch adjuster down so there is no gap between the locknut and the adjuster. And screwed the top screw all the way into the handle slot.
It sounds like you are only trying to adjust the cable adjusters, forgive me if I'm wrong, just trying to understand what you are typing,

Did you take the sprocket cover casing off at all. And did you adjust the centre nut on the worm drive with it in place on the pushrod.

Is the cable nice and smooth to pull through?
Is the worm drive smooth to turn and not too loose, be careful with it if you turn it too much you may loose the bearings from inside it, then its a pita to put back together in the right position, make sure it is well greased.
Put this back on the bike if its ok, adjust the centre screw as you were told to in previous post.
If this is done right put the cable back on and adjust both ends untill you have the right amount of freeplay at the lever.
Go ride.
That's about it.

You only need to put both these adjusters right in to either free the cable from the top (clutch lever) or to release the cable from the worm drive at the bottom, after refitting the worm drive and cable turn these adjusters back out to get the right amount of freeplay at the lever

If you pulled the worm drive completely apart did you put it together with the bearings all in place, you may also have put it together in the wrong bearing slot, you may need to just carefully take it apart and rotate it slightly so it goes into the next slot, study it and you'll see what I mean,
