Antifreeze/Coolant ... huh!

What to do today? I'll stick my shiny pump cover on. I'll just pop out and get some antifreeze/coolant .... Just how many variants of this stuff is there? This should have been a simple purchase but oh no ....
Did you want silicate, OAT, regular? Is that concentrated, regular or pre mixed? Will you require distilled water with that? It's f*ckin worse than Starbucks. I dunno!!! I just want coolant to go in my TLS.

I do know it's a 50/50 mix. What else do I know. It requires 2.2 ltrs for a full fill. Ethylene Glycol .... Can you even use that stuff .... I thought it was a banned substance!

I'm off to Epsom tomorrow in the Beemer so can drop back in to Halfrauds n get me some ... What though ... Any wise words or recommendations?

Name brand pure stuff and distilled water. I just make sure it says safe for aluminum on the back. Distilled water because you do not want the dissolved solids found in tap water. They can clog the radiator if there are enough minerals in the water. Mix to the ratio indicated on the rear for your temperatures. The water actually does most if not all of the cooling and the antifreeze lowers the freezing point as well as increasing the boiling point from 32/0 and 212/100 degrees to the different levels. So you may only need 40/60 or even less in mild climates. Water has a quite high specific heat which retains the heat of the engine block then dissipates it as it flows through the radiator. Running pure distilled water is fine but running pure coolant is a no no.
Or really push the boat out and use waterless coolant. Not a simple job and it's costly but it doesn't boil till about 180 c

So I've just read that with Honda ... They tell you ... On no account use silicate based products. Apparently it'll see off your pump seals in short order. So it might be the OAT pre mix .... Or d'ya know what I might just drop into Powerbiking and buy me some Castrol premixed ethylene glycol. Can go wrong then ...

Never cross contaminate the products either as the corrosion inhibitor capability is radically reduced.

I saw old Ed China stick that in a motor once. Pretty good stuff by all accounts. The coolant would be worth more than the bike ....;)
I don't know if you have it over there, but I use Peak Global in my bikes. There's no silicate or phosphate in it.

I saw the same programme.

Triumph tr6 I think. Run up to full temp and took rad cap off . No pressure as it's nowhere near boiling.
Not sure totally. But don't bmw use something similar on the new r1200 gs
got a vague recollection of very liw cooling capacity. But not an issue cos of the high boil point

My car uses OAT anti-freeze and it warns not to mix with the Ethyl Glyco stuff as it can turn to gel?
OAT = organic acid. Glycol is an alcohol so effectively a base. Acid + base = salt or in the case of the organic variants any number of unmentionable slimes something similar to those "soap free" hand wash detergents. Cook 'em together inside a nice hot engine and you are not looking at a rosy outcome.

Very possible ... always in the ACE cafe on a Friday morning for breakfast.
I'm only 10 mins from the Ace cafe. It's one of the reasons why I don't go there often, it's just to short of a ride. Newlands Corner and Loomies tend to be where I go most.

Just happens to be on my route in and an opportunity to catch up with a couple of similar minded mates. Not to mention a big mug of tea and a sausage sarnie ..... :yumyum
