I've been reading that you can retain the stock chain if you only go up 2 in the rear. How about this though? If you were to go +3 rear, -1 front. Would the chain still fit, and if so, would that be too much of a increase?
chain should fit no problem depending on where it was initially. For most of us we are around line 3 or 4 from the end so going up three wouldn't be a big issue. Going down one in the front will help but small changes in the front sprocket doesn't really effect the chain length like the rear sprocket does.
I went up to a 41 from a 39 and from a 16 to a 17 with no issues - but I also went to a 520 conversion with a new chain too...
