Anatomy of the TLR1000 VTWIN

Hey fellow TL riders. I have a question about the v-twin i have. as this is my first twin i am not really sure what is here and what isn't. after pulling the breather box, i believe i saw a pcv in the back cylinder. Did I really see that and if so, is there one in the front also? this bike sat in storage for almost 8 yrs since it was last ridden. so far I had to change the the seals and fluid in both fork legs and rebuild the fuel pump for it was seized. it runs very strong with the full Yoshi exhaust , but the idle sucks down low and isn't very smooth below 2500 rpm. this bike is bone stock minus the full exhaust. Any advice would be greatly honored.

Thanks in advance,

By the way, has anyone stretched their tlr?

If you are referring to the hose connected to the rear valve cover, it is not a PCV valve, but it is part of the crankcase ventilation system. Follow the hose and you'll find it goes to a fixture between the cylinders. From there, another hose goes to the bottom of the airbox. If all is connected, it shouldn't need any attention.
....By the way, has anyone stretched their tlr?
If you are serious about stretching your TLR, PM me about the swing arm. :)
Right on for the info about the crankcase. im trying to get rid of the old pics so i can post the new. I did some small mods based off things i have read and things that i saw were just from bad engineering or just lacked the pizzazz that should be a Suzuki. I did already do the stretch, 9 in to be exact. Custom gap tray and trunk that i designed at work(which is where I am damn near everyday, this time of the year. Did some powder coating on some parts that need it to not look so dull and unimportant. I have one more question for you, what does this mean? TLOTM & BBOTM

BlksTLr1000,

I am in a similar boat. Tearing down, finding things missing, modding away. I have a suggestion on idle, based on the thinking on why my idle is not consistent.

Compression: Fine assumed if its running above those RPMs. Same here.

Fuel: You mentioned rebuilding the pump, did that include changing the fuel filter? I changed mine (and modded it out of the tank). That started cleaning up the low end. I am going to look into rebuilding my pump with the Bosch part to eliminate fuel delivery. I am also going to have my injections rebuilt. 8 years sitting and I assume the fuel delivery system has some varnish in there. Injector cleaner and ride it hard to clear and heat it up. Then do a TPS and throttle body sync. Which leads to:

Air: You have an R, so your air delivery system to the injectors is fine for now, but I bet bet bet your vacuum lines are brittle and cracked like mine. Another product of sitting for a long time. This is mine:

No chance I am not leaking vacuum. Vacuum leak = uneven throttle body pressures = poor idle. At least that is my guess. I am just going to trim the ends of any nasty pieces while replacing whatever else I can with new stuff.

Just some thoughts. Listen to Six5, as a good general rule... he fixes things.

You guys remember that story (more like a fairy tale) about the guy who fell asleep under a tree for all those yrs? Up, thats my tlr, except it wasnt under now tree. Ya 8 yrs is a lot of time for a bike to just sit. As far as repairs and maintenance, I am a true Man with that. Certified tech for close to 12 yrs then i got tired of it, (other peoples unneccassary headaches!) and changed fields to Fabrication. I have already changed my hoses, did the valve lash, pulled the tps and and did the visual, mechanical, and electrical inspection. New thermostat and the fan mod. Braided hoses front and back with the twin micro line set up in the front and also braided lines from levers to reservoirs. new chain and rear sprocket(40), bearings everywhere. The Pump was rebuilt in April when i got it because it wouldnt start and yes it rode like shit the first 40 miles or so. Then i started riding it to work which is all hiway and after the first week she would wheelie for me all the way to 3rd gear. oh ya, i went with 35wt hi\lo hid lighting, led tail, mirror w/signal and r turns. i pulled the stator and actually passed is inspection. I did some other stuff too. now all the rest is pure one off fab and custm mods. By the way, I am working on something for the stretch out back, a purely custom piece that i have never seen. Im not to sure anyone has done it, but we will see. Thanks to everyone who has dropped some TL "V" science on me because honestly, I LOVE THIS BIKE! She can be so temperamental some days and it seems like every ride is different.

People...... If you own something and use it everyday, when it is in need of repair...............DO IT RIGHT, NOT THE CHEAP WAY. Please think of the people who are some kind of TECH and how they feel because you cheapied some repair now they have to fix your mess. Have A Good Day

Six5,

If you look at my album Pic 5. Under my over flow bottle, wat is that grey thing that looks like a fire cracker?
Awesome work bud. Looks swank. Love the tray, so clean. I am going to get stainless brake lines and new pots here soon and do a brake upgrade. My fluid looked like coffee when I bleed the factory old trash. I bet you saw some nasty in there after 8 years...

Did you move the fuel filter from the tank when you were in there? Did you do the R/R charging mod? Maybe the lower voltage is starving the coils? I cut off some of the copper on the plug side to clean up the connection as well as shorten the load. Another thing I think will clean up my rough idle. I have wired my R/R up but not tested. I did however "build" one for my brothers 250cc scooter and his charging volts went up 1.1V at IDLE!!

Last thought? Colorado? High altitude? Lean? Just guessing now. :O

Yep but mine say tl1000, not busa

I got shorter extensions, then cut them down even more, then welded them on instead of bolting them on.
So if stock went from -1 to 0 inches, mine now goes from 0 to +6 inches.
That's on my TLS though.

There are some considerations when you go longer than about +4. You can get more weight on the front. The rear leverage is different. To some extent the extended arm transfers more weight to the front which makes up for the increased leverage of the longer arm, so you might get away with the rear spring and damping, maybe just increase spring preload a bit at both front and rear. On my TLS I went all the way to 1.1 on my front springs (really a 1.0 cut down & spacered to get to 1.1) and I installed a Bitubo with a stronger spring where the stock spring on a stick was, and an R1 shock where the rotary damper was. On my TLR I have a normal Bitubo where the stock spring on a stick was, and an Ohlins shock with a small titanium helper spring where the rotary was. Having dual shocks is a bit heavy, and has double the "sticktion" so there are disadvantages. But neither is too near the rear exhaust, and neither should fade and they should have a big range of adjustment. And most of the springing is thru the slightly progressive linkage, like stock. If I don't want the extra damping, I can decrease the Bitubo damping until it does little more than the stock spring on a stick. But I can't recommend this until I actually ride on one of these bikes of mine.

Hi guyz,

Thnks for all the replies. I got her back together for a test ride yesterday and WOW! Tasks completed.....new bearings everywhere, valve seat job and adjust, air box mod, 16\40 gearing, pc3 with Jap map adjusted for Colorado altitude, 9 in stretch with .750 rear drop(keeps geometry close to stock height) Fresh fork seals and fluid, fan switch, thermostat. New rte, stator remove, inspect, clean, inspect again. Custom Crank Case breather set up. Dual front micro ss brakelines, micro break line out back. With all that done, i still have more to go. She is a beast now. I will post pics next week when completed,
Whats it like fellow TL Lovers? Im hoping all is well with everyone. Well here is your first look at my "re1ent1e$$" inspired TL1000r. Any and all comments are welcome on likes and dis-likes. Keep in mind that, seat cowl is not pictured due to still being in transport, Custom hugger for the stretch is in paint and tank graphics are being applied later today. I also have a polished back wheel thats being powdered (only the spokes and the very center) and will be going thru install preparation Friday when i get back to work. I have one other question....rear turn signals arent working anymore. its not the lights, verified good, but when i check for power in the circuit, I get 12v on-off-on-off then no more after that. Has anyone else had this issue, is it the relay? it is still the original relay and i did give all the electrical a thorough once over, cleaning all connections and ground

Blks,

Looks awesome. I love the matching mirror brace. I kinda like the naked tank...

Where are you getting the flashing 12v signal? From the flasher relay output? at the bulb housing?

My rear signals were not working and the contacting base for the bulb on the bulb plug side had gone. Resoldered a new metal base tab and all is fine now. Wouldn't have known it without inspection, so that might be a common failure point.
rxf610 ,

I got my turns figured out. Faulty ground in harness. Did the ground mod with more (-)ing spots and some better wire and now all is brite, more so than when first purchased. Also installed a cute little relay that we use at work in our 12v dc machines on my led brake and i know those damn cars can see me now for sure. Thanks for all the help. One last piece to a completed, well almost completed motor bike (we know how that story goes) and i will be posting the pics with a actual list of everything done. ****..........i just realized i never did the math yet. Wow i wonder what it is.
Lovely bike you got there! Except the stretch, but thats up to everyones liking.. :)
