6 bolt clutch onto '97 tls questions

1476 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  tootall
In the process of fitting a six bolt clutch into my tl. Bought the bike with no clutch fitted at all so kinda building a jigsaw :-D got the hub, sleeve and basket mounted and plates fitted all according to the parts fiche. Couple of questions though. Do all the friction plates line up or is the last one offset?
Fitting the big sleeve nut and it doesn't want to do up far enough to peen the locking flange bit. Am I supposed to be using different washers or nut or something?
Thanks

the last one is offset

make sure the basket is lined up properly with the oil pump gear as the basket might not be far enough back and tightening it up will shatter the oil pump gear

Thanks,
Will double check basket fitment but pretty sure its butted up to the big washer.
Remember to loctite the spring posts etc...
Hmmmmm

Double checked and refitted the complete six bolt assembly twice. Same problem.

Dug out the five bolt assembly and it bolts up perfect.

Is there a six bolt assembly that is NOT compatible with a '97 tls?

Bit pissed off coz have got plates for the six bolt but not for the five!
My 6 bolt clutch went in my 97 tls ok. As Stu says, line up the gears correctly first, if not, it will break the oil pump drive. I had to try about 5 times with mine until it sat right, you think its right by looking but if its not right, its only out by a few mm and that breaks the teeth.
Oil pump gear is perfectly engaged every time. Everything lines up fine, there's just not enough thread left to do the nut up properly. The five bolt basket allows plenty. Dunno what's going on. :(

Sounds like it is time to break out the calipers and measure things. Find out which part is different.....

Fit the thrust washer with the bevelled edge on the shaft first, followed by the sleeve and needle roller and then the basket, all three items should be flush inside the basket, fit the 2nd thrust washer followed by the hub and back torque setup. Make sure the back torque setup is located in the hub correctly.
Cheers Sam. That's basically what I've been doing. Will measure everything, try again and take some pics.
