40 tooth sprocket and chain length

2402 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  TLR Tim
so got all my bike back together today after fitting a R swinger to it

its a 97 S by the way

as part of the fettling process I was also fitting a 40 tooth rear sprocket I have heard that this is the limit for the chain length before you need to start putting a longer chain on!!

well not so for me! the chain was like a bow string!!

so its back on with the old 38 tooth sprocket for now as I'm not paying for a chain as its only done about 2k!

do you think swapping the front to a 16 tooth sprocket would give me enough slack to allow a 16 40 combination!

but thats not going to tell me if a 16 40 combo will allow me to use a 104 link chain ;)
I just fitted 17/40 and was told by my suzukidealer to get a 106 chain.. To get about 40 mm slack (when on rear paddockstand) i had to adjust the rear blocks so five markings are showing.. Dont know if this helps.. :)

Edit:
But i dont have a R-swinger... So all this info may be worthless.. :)

On Sam's sprocket ratios (TL1000S) chart, 16 / 40 104 links.

I'll throw out useless info like Jonstorp. :rotfl

I'll back you though buddy! Does the swinger affect chain slack? ???

Same frame mounting location. Is it the same length? I know the brake bar has to be swapped ( I assumed because of clearance not length) so maybe it's different. So question is: does changing the arm change the wheelbase?

:cheers I'm drinking beers watching the Olympics so my posts tonight might not make sense!
It must be the swinging arm, mine and the missus's S's have been running 17/40 for years with 104 chain length.
Hmmm odd! The R swingarm is supposed to be the same length as the S

With the 38 tooth sprocket I have the same amount of slack and spacing with the s arm!

Where is this chart? Can't say I have seen it

That'll be the one that Hursty46 flagged up? Innit?
i run a 16/41 on an R and the standard is 17/39 so by useing a 16 front you should be fine
