2001 TLR need some help

I am new to TL forum and i have had a struggle with a 2001 TLR that i bought a couple of years ago and being strapped for cash i haven't got much done. My problems are the bike seems to flood with a strong odor of fuel coming from the exhaust and after sitting on the charger and several attempts to fire the bike it will start but seems to fall on it face when i go to wot i have changed the plugs several times and im getting a bit tired of doing it. I love my bike and the previous owner didn't know what he had and nearly destroyed it all safety wires as far as the tip over sensor clutch sensor and kick stand sensor have been cut or removed (not by me) and a host of other things just a few ideas would be great on where to start. Any help is very appreciated. The main thing is when i go out for a ride im afraid to shut it down on account it might not start again. Thank you again

have you fixed all the wiring so it all works as it should?

the clutch switch is the main one to start with as the bike will be running in neutral map and wont be running right at all
Make sure you balance the carbs and TPS. You will fall in love again I promise.

Another reliability issue that needs to be addressed early on is the functionality of the charging system. Is it working properly? TLs are known to have charging problems. If the battery is not charging properly, it will be difficult to start, as well as unreliable.

Follow the instructions in this thread to test the charging system.

Thank you for the starting points. I'm going to dive into it this weekend its just been a little chilly here with out a heated garage i haven't been to happy with messing with it. I will keep ya updated with what i find out and thank you again for the help.
Put up some pics when you can of the bike, strip all the faring off and give the electrical a once over, try to hook back up all the switches and electrical connectors as well as cleaning them, then do all the upgrade with the wiring, such as lights and charging mod. Where about in South Dakota are you? I am planning a trip to Mount Rushmore on my bike for the summer and would like to do Sturgis at the same time. Have you ever been to Sturgis and are they receptive to crotch rocket there?

Good Luck and Thanks

Also welcome to the forum.

This is a great place to start for sure

Stu knows what he is talking about....

You can probably repair that one for free if the plug is still inside the clutch lever just cut. The sidestand "safety" feature is more of a nuisance to me. My kickstand wouldn't fully depress the switch and cut me out without notice. I have completely bypassed mine by simply shorting and weatherproofing it. Let's face it. If you feel confident enough to ride a 1000cc monster, I hope you don't take off with the stand down. :laugh

Tip over should be addressed next, but let's just get her running right and firing up. Coil mod and charging mod should help it light up quicker, and the headlight mod should take the stress off the system quite a bit more.

sv 1000 coils sure help
sv 1000 coils sure help
And help more with the Coil mod to feed those puppies... A pair of titties are useful only if you can get them out of their restrictive bras!!! :rotfl
I'm definitely comfortable with it being a 1000cc and with it being a V-twin it drew me to it even more. I haven't topped her out yet but i feel that the time may be closing in. 165 is what i have done so far out on the interstate with no one on the stretch with me i beleave if i do something stupid its always better to do it alone. As far as going to sturgis no i haven't been out there but they do accept rockets its taken a while but a biker is a biker. again thank you for the feed back everyone i'm going to dive head first into it on saturday and atleast get her stripped down.
