Cleaning the caliper pistons works great, but AVOID using petroleum based products on brake seals or any rubber parts for that matter.

I just thought I'd let you guys know.. I did this "brake magic" to my bike the other day and found out that I only had 1 pot compressing (on a 6 pot caliper) on my front right side and only 2 pots compressing on my left side. I ended up having to do an entire caliper rebuild on both of the front brakes. the difference is AMAZING! I'm sure thats what caused my rotor to break the rivits and basically fall apart on me. anywho. I just thought I would make it known that this is probably a life saving thread for me.

Good deal man.
I was thinking of posting to see if you got the bike going again.
Congrats!!!
I have noticed that mine need attention again. I can feel the lever sticking when I apply the binders.
Cheers to ya!

I was also told not to use anything on the pestons besides brake fluid, but Im wondering if there is some acceptable lube to put on the pistons when reinstalling them? Make them glaide and sort of seal the pistons from collecting grime in them?

I've used a thin smear of fork oil before with no ill-effects Then again, I have a small bottle of hyd' components assembly fluid
I have a huge bottle of pure silicone fluid, anybody know if that would be safe to use

very spectacular, pushed my thumbnail through my thumb as an apprentice many moons ago, be careful using this method.

If you use a new tyre valve for a car wheel you can get a decent seal on the caliper for an airline, if the caliper is dismounted. Use a wooden spacer in the caliper so you don't blast a piston out.
And yes, watch your fingers !
