Track Gearing - Tires
Hey guys - Hoping to get to the track this summer and had a couple questions regarding set up.
I've got an 02 TLR - Just happen to have an extra set of wheels laying around so I figured I'd set them up with some track tires, Just wondered what you guys would recommend running.
I'm not gonna spend a ton of time at the track really, prob just a few days this summer but more in the future I'm sure, as I free up more time and cash.... So I'm wondering if it is even worth it at this point? How much difference will a good race tire make over a street tire (for a newbie racer)? I currently run Metzeler M1 Sportec's on my TLR...
Also If I did set up a separate set of wheels, what is the best sprocket size to use for general track riding? I'm currently running 16/40... so obviously I wont be changing the front, but I'm thinking it's probably a good idea to go up a couple more teeth on the back. I just wanna make sure I stick within the limits of my chain.
What do you guys think? Thanks for the advice!

The better tyres the better grip. if you go out to the track a few timew for a look you may be able to lick up some cast off slicks for a good price.
The gearing is to suit the track. you will only know by riding there. simply put you should be close to the red line at the fastest part of the track in 6th.
more complex is getting the gearing suitable for more complex corners.
go to the file vault and download a twist of the wrist . he explains a lot of things very easily.
enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and my usual bit of advice.....TAPE OVER THE SPEEDO!!!!

I'm not a pro by any stretch, but I find it easier to ride in one or two gears around the track. This works great to get you focusing on other things. Generally, I don't get any higher than 4th. But, like I said, I'm SLOW!!!! I'm still practicing on body position. Speed will come later.
Don't even worry about the second set of wheels. I have a second set that I intended to use just as you. They're still sitting collecting dust.

if your getting slicks then you really need tire warmers and a front and rear stand for 2 reasons. 1.slicks take longer to warm up and 2.they go off at a relatively low number of heat cycles. so you have to keep them warm over the whole day. after one or two trackdays of 6-8 sesions of warm up and cool down, slicks have just about had it.

I'll second getting a set of tire warmers... I have a set for my track days.. and swear by them.
I like being able to keep my tires warm alllllll day long. I also like having them for the piece of mind it gives me on the first couple of laps. Tires are not FULLY up to temp from the get go ...but damn close and the lack of slipping sure feels good! :thumb up
As for rubber, I would go with a good dual compound, then as skills come up... go with a better tire.. get some advice from the locals at the track.. they can give you some advice as to what works and at what temps. It's alot to take in on the first few track days. Dont worry... it will all gell after the second or third time... then your hooked!!

I appreciate the advice guys... I don't thin I'll worry about a second set of wheels and tires...
I'd probably be better off selling them and putting that money toward an upgraded rear shock...
then maybe down the road setting up better rubber.
Also after reading, I realized something I didn't know before... a broken in chain and a
new spocket is not the best idea... so I guess that kinda rules out having an extra
set of wheels to interchange anyway.

set of wets very important for trackdays you always hope you'll not need em but when you do on the sprocket issue just swap the cush drive and sprocket you already have mounted in to the other wheel no need for a second sprocket

I would hold off on the tire warmers until you can run at a pace for the race tires that require them. A good street/track combo tire like a Pilot Power, Pirelli Corsa3 or similar track day tire don't need warmers and provide great grip in the wet or dry. Spend the money on more track time and leave the tire warmers for later on.
I run a -1 front/+2 rear gearing and it suits me for every track i have ridden in the area with TPM. You'll loose a little top end, but the bike will pull very well out of the corners.
