Bite the bullet.
As regards to the leaky 97 clutch cover, ive pissed about with the one i have on the bike, tried sealant, new gasket, shaving the bushes slightly all to no avail, but i did notice that when me cover was off if was a 98+ cover so it seems to me no matter which cover you get, it's gonna leak regardless, having said that i dont know of any 98+ bikes that suffer with it, i had to buy a new one from the dealers at a cost of £85 came with the 't' bushes but no gasket but i had one anyway, made sure everything was spotless and fitted as per service manual and torqued to the specified 11nm, and presto, no smoke machine or oil slick, so in my opinion if you have a leaky 97, just buy a cover and gasket for a 98+,i got the part number for a 2000 tls and used that, saves alot of time and swearing at previous failed attempts. And the dealer got it next day which was a bonus, same amount of time you would wait for the sealant to cure.
Just my 10 pence worth.

if your cover has been distorted by ham fisted operators then no amount of sealant will fix it.
however if you get a sheet of 120grit paper and put it on a sheet of glass and rub the cover over it till the gasket face is nice and even you will get it to seal again.
there is nothing like a new part tho. nice and shiny too

That's really odd. The '98+ cover is SO much better than the '97 that I've never heard of one leaking.
