..the chain adjuster broke??

as in the one at the end of the swingarm on each side? how the hell does that break? it's a sodding bolt pushing on the slide blocks for the rear axle.

Exactly. What was the real first cause of the problem? Did they forget to tighten the axle?

As said by others, if the rear wheel had been off for some reason (new tire, etc.), one possibility is that the shop didn't properly torque the axle and/or the adjustment bolt/nut. The chain slider itself is probably pretty unlikely to just break on its own -- more likely that it broke when the chain slacked and bunched up.

A tech who worked at a dealership where I once worked had a bike come back after he 'torqued' the rear axle with an impact. Tough to be accurate doing work like this. As the customer was riding, the rear axle slid forward, chain slacked and rammed into the engine case. Damn lucky the guy was able to slide to a stop. I didn't work there much longer -- I took the time to do things right and as a result didn't make enough money to be worthwhile for me, whereas customers paid a great deal for even simple work.

Also, you questioned earlier in the post regarding if something in the clutch could cause a lockup -- absolutely.

You might want to inspect what you can before riding again even after the shop 'completes' the work.

Ride safe.

Yep, I was going to guess chain buffer.
I replaced mine a couple of years ago as a just in case.
There have been a few that that has happened to in the past.
TlBillbo I think it was your thread that got me looking at mine.
It was one of those 30 dollar deals that was well spent.

since i just bought the bike i guess i should have gone through it more closly. i would guess the previous owner is more the cause of the troubles i have had with the bike. the tech i use has a great reputation and is very reasonable on his rates. i did however order a hard copy of the shop manuel and will from here
on take a more active roll in the maintainance of my bike.

sorry everyone my terminology was off. it was not the chain adjuster that broke it was the chain buffer. a twenty dollar piece caused all the havoc. lets hope she is finally right so i can get some riding time on her. got my manuel in the mail yesterday. so after i pick her up and take her for a spin. i will go through the manuel and start identifiing the parts and start building the confidence to start doing most of my own work. thanks guys!
