Battery Trouble??
Hey guys,
I want to start this post by saying how much useful info is on this site. I have spent countless hours researching various topic to get ideas and gain clarity on future projects. I bought an '01 tlr and tried to start it just after the guy dropped it off from his freeway delivery route. He had ridden 40+miles only about an hour before I tried to start the bike. I got about 10 cranks of which only 3 were solid sounding rotations. He had told me that the battery was new so I hooked it up to my Tender Jr and within an hour the light was green. Fired right up and went riding on the new bike! 2 days later the battery was dead again. After researching the battery/charging issue I concluded that starting with a battery I KNOW is new is the best choice. After dealing with the current battery issue and the charging/riding/dead battery problems I picked up the new Yusa (or however its spelled). Just tonight I hooked it up to the tender Jr to charge it up and the new battery ony took 2 hours to charge!! Is this normal for a new battery on a .8 amp charge? Should I hook it up to a 1.2 amp charger for 5 hours like the battery cover recommends? Before I go riding with the new battery I want to make sure it is properly charged. I will also clean all necessary connectors as well. Thanks for the help and I truly love this site...HID's coming soon! |

Greetings
I found the last time i bought a new Yuasa it went to something like 12.4 volts with just letting it settle after filling it with acid (i trickle charged after that) If you are in any doubt get it load tested or you might be able to set a voltmeter up at the battery terminals and do some crank/start tests to see how it is performing. Don't forget to check the plug and socket at your 30 amp fuse take off at the battery positive for corrosion or signs of over heating. ![]() ![]()

know the difference?

If the battery hasn't been in storage for long, and as stored cool, it might not have lost all that much of it's charge and 2 hours on the tender was enough.

The only thing that worries me is that the brand new battery only took 2 hours to charge on a .8 amp "tender" charger after I put in the electrolytes. I'm hoping that this is a sufficient initial charge for the battery and wondering why it didn't require the 5+ hours the cover recommends.

if unsure the best test for a battery is a load test if not available use your bike starter circuit and volt meter i believe with lights on the when you crank the engine it should not drop below 9.5V and should actually stay above 10 during cranking...next is to check battery voltage when engine is running should be 13-14V depending on RPM if not check other areas for problems...just had battery die left me at gas station tho...bike started fine 5 min. earlier then zippo

The new battery has made the bike feel like it is new. I'm getting around 14.3 volts at idle and around 13.9-14.1 @ 5K rpm. The person before me rode the bike infrequently the last year and probably never charged up the battery. Thanks for the help!
