Probably should be in one of the other forums - it may get moved!
Anyway, you need something like an Acumen DG8 - this compares the tach signal with the wheel speed signal & calculates then displays the appropriate gear. I'm not sure if the 250 Ninja has electronic speed signal? Think it might be mechanical - cable drive? No matter even if it is - you can add an auxiliary speed sender to provide the input for that. Not difficult to install or wire up. You can get in the US from somewhere like RiderStation Edit - I see the 08 has a new speedo, possibly electronic drive which would make it easier - you just need the DG8 in that case - universal model most likely. |

k i just called riderstation and they said that nobody makes one for any 08'' bikes, the speedo is cable driven on the 250r. but cant i use a indicator that is for a cable driven speedo bike? i dont need one with a direct fit harness. i can wire the thing in.

As in my first reply, just get the universal kit plus the cable-speedo accessory - they don't list the speed sender kit on the website but you can ask them at riderstation to get it for you.
You don't actually even need the specific Acumen sender - you can use any Hall effect Speed sender. But convenient to get in one package. Note that the update rate with the speed sender will be quite slow - especially in the lower gears. Use the maximum number of magnets in the kit to get the fastest response. Here's a thread of how it turned out on my Triumph before the Digital gauges (I combined the gear indicator with an electronic speedo retro using the DG8 speed sender for both) Ignore the first part about the gauge conversion and check the pics on the speed sender install on the swing-arm/sprocket. Check the video link & you can see how the thing responds much slower in the lower gears (because wheel speed is lower) I used 6 trigger magnets. Overall that bike speed is pretty low though, the bike was on the rear stand. In actual use, it is most helpful for avoiding trying to find "7th" gear ![]() |

I agree about the response time - however not that much work to install, even with the speed sender (ignore all the speedo mod stuff that is part of the same post)
Here is another option from Engear - these guys claim to have fast update response although I have no personal experience of them. You would still need a speed sender - on the linked page go to the "sensors" link at the top of the page - the sendr is the first item. That one has advantage in that no magnets to mess with, just line up the detector opposite sprocket or rotor bolts. Here's a video from YouTube with the Engear Last edited by D'Ecosse; 07-07-2008 at 01:28 PM. |
