Aprilia has announced that it will be backing Team Giofil’s 2010 Dakar Rally effort, with their four modified 2010 Aprilia RXV 4.5 race bikes. Team Giofil is already off to an impressive start this year, with a class win at the 2009 Rally of the Pharoahs, and hopes to add to that success in the Dakar Rally, which is confusingly being held in South America again this year.
With Dakar kicking off tomorrow (January 1st-17th), Team Giofil will have 16 grueling days of racing that will push the Italian adventure bike to it’s limits.*Riders for Team Giofil will be Paolo Ceci, Gerard Farres, Francisco Lopez and Alex Zanotti.

Just out of curiosity, is there a function that the high blunt nosed front end provides that all of the Dakar type bikes seem to have?

A Kourier has to establish space on the pavement. Predictable law-abiding behaviour lulls drivers. They mentally assign you to a little box in the lane, assume you will stay there, can't handle it when you leave that little box.
Y.T. is not fond of boxes. Y.T. establishes her space on the pavement by zagging mightily from lane to lane, establishing a precedent of scary randomness. Keeps people on their toes, makes them react to her, instead of the other way round.

I'm guessing it's purely a function of fitting in/protecting the bulky rolling road-map/Sat Nav/GPS gear

I'd guess that just like on "normal" bikes it's to direct airflow and protect shield the rider a bit. The big difference is that in this application it doesn't have to look pretty. Function over form you know.

This is my guess as well. It doesn't look terribly aerodynamic and none of the baja racers run them (and I think speeds are similar).
