Dunlop to be Single Tire Supplier for Moto2

The Gran Prix Commission, which consists of the FIM, Dorna Sports, the IRTA (satellite teams), and MSMA (bike manufacturers), met while in Assen this weekend and have announced several new rules to the MotoGP and Moto2 series for 2010.

Most notably is the the single-tire rule that will be adopted for the inaugural Moto2 season, and that Dunlop will be the provider for all the tires in that series.

Moto2 was designed to make a cheap racing series, whose costs could be directly associated for R&D into production 600cc streetbikes. Noting how the single-tire rule in MotoGP has helped reduced costs in that series, the Commission made the logical connection for Moto2. Tires sizes will mirror those on the street, with teams limited to front wheels in dimension of 3.75″ x 17″, and rear wheels in dimension of 6.00″ x 17″ only.

Clearly in response to rumors, the Commission’s other announcements primarily confirm that current rules in MotoGP will stay in place for the next season, most notably the length and schedule for race practices, and will be allowed two bikes per rider. This should dispel any rumors of a single-bike rule for 2010 in MotoGP, and also goes against the hopes of many teams for longer practice sessions.
