Old suzuki oil cooled bike is a good choice. Reliable engine, plenty torque and few electrics compared to the TL. A beemer GS1100 or 1150 is very comfy as well, hauls stuff, twin, so ugly it's pretty! Stay away from the 1200 though..

BNC, how close are you to that $4800 Multi? Those $5k Tuonos are tempting too
Loki, good thoughts on the suzukis BMW GS's tend to be $$$$ even used and with lots of miles, but they do look like they could cover a lot of miles with ease.

What do y'all think of this?
Z1000 for $3.3k with corbin seat - seems a good price, though an I4 isn't my prefered means of burning dinos...
http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/1249534782.html
I think the pros would be good handling and power, cons would be somewhat cramped egronomics and possibly bad engine vibration (some reviews mention excessive buzzyness which is something that tends to bother me on longer rides). A big pro is its $3,300 and I could almost certainly re-sell it for that or better in CA I'd think

Pretty long ass way, it's about half way between Austin and San Antonio right in the middle of prime Hill Country riding. I'm sure as hell not in the middle of anything known as prime.

Here you go... 2 cylinders, luggage rack, ohlins, shaft drive...
http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/mcy/1248092815.html
Once sorted guzzis tend to be very reliable. The challenge in your situation would be having the confidence that the seller has it fully sorted.
or for a better fairing and less coin:
http://sfbay.en.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/1244784959.html
There's no picture but it's an aluminum framed guzzi trailie bike that could be right up your alley (except for the weight perhaps) You might inquire in case the seller has a duc he might part with too.

Have you considered a wee Strom? Great mileage, reasonable handling and ok on dirt roads...

Thanks shep
BNC, that S3 looks like fun and I dig the green
I wouldn't mind a triple - only common engine configureation I've not spent any time with I suppose (I've done v2, I4 and v4 and of course all manner of singles).
Those look mighty nice Pete, I especially like the V11. I wouldn't mind a quota either. If not for the price I'd totally dig the new Stelvo
I've thought about a weestrom or even veestrom, but haven't managed to get myself excited about one yet. Very good bikes and all, just sorta bland (that and I still remember the headache I got from riding one once - turbulence that would make a round with mike tyson child's play I'm sure). Of coures the turbulence could be fixed by removing the windscreen or something I'd think. I think I'd lean toward a Bandit 1200S before a Strom if I go the sensible route

Honestly the Multistrada looks pretty nice. The stock seats are garbage and tend to push your bits forward into the tank (at least that's how they were when they first came out). One bike, and I know it's not what you were necessarily thinking about (and maybe have a good reason) is an old Honda GL1000 naked. Can pick one up pretty cheap, put a little maintenance into it (as needed), clean it up a little, and sell it for a profit. I'd love to have one of those, especially one with the mag wheels.
