Failed valve bucket tappets?

Hello all

Has anyone ever experienced failed (broken) valve bucket tappets? (I'm not sure if it is the right English technical term, it's the piece that you put over the shims and that is in touch with the camshaft)

Not that I had something like that, but we have currently a warning/discussion in the German forum about this. (even if you can't read German, have a look at the images and you will understand)
http://www.tl1000.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15643
http://www.tl1000.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13207

In short words: Wolfgang observed a number of failed buckets, always on the front EX cam. And he also observed many buckets with hair cracks. So his advice is to check the buckets visually at the next valve adjustment.

--> Anyone ever experienced this?
And do the engine experts have a clue why this would happen? The buckets are quite common Suzuki parts still used in the SV and DL engines.

Greetings
Rufer

I've not seen that before! I think you have the terms right so far as I know

All I can think of that might cause it would be running with the valve clearances quite loose and/or getting a bit of valve float might tend to hammer them pretty hard. Especially if anyone is running oversized valves (heavier?).

I've seen that twice, both in a Mercedes automobile. The first happened very quickly after a head gasket job. The bucket had been lifted and the shim had moved halfway out of its recess causing the bucket to snap in half after about 15 minutes of warmup. The second was unexplained as the broken bucket and valve scored the camshaft and the shim was nowhere to be found .

I have seen stress cracks appear in the surface of auto buckets. if you see some and are in doubt then have them professionally tested at an auto engine reconditioner. over revving would be a possible cause, tho they are probably hard chrome plated and this develops surface imperfections which are not likely to cause failure.

I've not seen shim buckets fail but I have had a cam gear shear off the exhaust cam.

The TL buckets are not chrome plated as far as I know.
In the German post Wolfgang writes that you can see the cracks as dark lines. If he sees something like that, he exchanges the bucket.

Overreving could definitely cause this, but this would not explain why it always happens on the front cylinder.

Greetings
Rufer

Speculation: with the radiator location or other challenges perhaps valve adj. are more likely to be botched on the front cylinder leading to the observed problem?

Hmmm, some geusses

Shit tappets? Maybe the tappet is expanding and cracking the sleeve/ bucket?

Maybe there is not enough lube getting to the tappet/ bucket causing fracture and failure?

Clearances were too loose causing the cam lobe to strike the tappet edge?

Also, if its just the one bike that has that issue, perhaps something isn't right about that specific head causing the tappets to break
