TLR crankshaft into TLS 97

Good afternoon,

A few weeks ago my crankshaft died on my TLS from 1997.

Since a new crankshaft was not worth the cost taken aside from the what the bike was worth, I managed to get a TLR crankshaft from a 2001 model of ebay for a reasonable price.

I have also orderd tlr rods and bearings.

I read somewhere something about the oil jet, since tls crankshaft only got lubricated from one side, and tlr crankshaft has 2 holes to get lubrication from both sides, is it necessary to change something to the oil jet or pump before assembling the engine?

Or will the existing oil pump do the job?

Thanks for your advice in this, as far as I know nothing was wrong with my oil pump or something....

TLR crankshaft in TLS engine cases : OK

Hi mate,

this is what I did for my '97 TLS. You can put a TLR crankshaft inside the cases without any problem.
I would say I aso put the TLR oil pump inside, as you may know the TLR oil pump as much more capacity and thus the extra flow would be a benefit for your engine.

I managed to get TLR cases for my TLS when my sprocket bearing was slammed into the '97 TLS casing. Suzuki also supplied TLR oil jets, bearings and an oilpump.

Next to smaller bearing clearances compared to the TLS setup the oilflow to the head is changed. i don't know if the TLR jets are smaller or larger than the TLS ones.

Is it necessary to change that oil pump or will the existing oil pump manage the job?

I have allready crankshaft, rods & bearings, I still was thinking about the necesity if oil pump needed to be changed....

The TLR has a #14 oil jet, the 97 TLS has a #10 (same size as the 2 jets under the barrels)

The location of the bottom end oil jet is behind the M8/12mm blanking plug furthest forward on the left side under the starter clutch approx.

All the oil pumps are the same now, even if you order from an old part number you will get the larger unit.

There is no need to replace rods, only difference are slightly moddified thrust face oil grooves on the sides.

Dunno the difference but 2 TLS oilpumps (02F00 and 02FA0) were discontinued. The third model 02FB0 is the same as the TLR.

There must be a reason for that.

Straight swap, ideally change the oil jet described above for better gearbox lubrication aswell.

Just check or replace the rod shells to match the new big end tolerance codes if keeping the TLS rods.

Engine has been reassembled a while ago, is in great running condition as we speak.
Just had to change the clutch springs with barnett ones, since my clutch started to slip after rebuild.

Will I gain some horsepower with that TLR crank or not?

Oil jet has also been changed with a bigger one..
