Which one of these things is not like the other?
This stems from this incident. I haven't pulled the head off yet (ran out of time with class last night). Hopefully the valve didn't score the piston/cylinder up too bad. It destroyed the tip of the spark plug though. I don't believe i've punched a whole in the piston as the bike is seized a few degrees before TDC on the exhaust stroke.. I'll know more tonight.
Now the question is, do I buy heads ($250), a new engine ($700) or a wrecked parts TL with no known engine damage ($500, plus a road trip to NY)...

I once had a screw fall out of a carbie and into and engine. Didn't mark the valve or seat, didn't hurt the spark plug. Pulled the head off, pulled the screw out of the top of the piston (wasn't in hard). Put the head back on.
Within 2 miles the motor was knocking again. Pulled the head off, thought hang on this piston shouldn't be TDC, touched it and it fell down the bore. The crown had separated from the rest of it. (Skirt and gudgeon pin still intact and moving up and down with the conrod).
When I pulled the bottom end out, that's when I saw the bend in the rod and the mashed big end bearing.
You might be lucky, but the damage isn't always readily visible. I vote replacement engine.

I'd go for the wrcked bike, if it is the full thing. Always good to have other spares.

maaaaaate
the head has come off the valve
expect utter carnage to the cylinder.
the rod and bearing may be reuseable tho
you will need at minimum cylinder piston and head
post more pics.
wouldn't be surprised to see valve wedged inpiston.
it is possible cylinder is not damaged
( I once had a friend who did similar in a bmw car and did not want to pull the engine and replace the piston so we repaired the head and I cleaned the hole in the middle of the piston adn I welded it up with it still in engine and still in the car. not a recommende repair for a high performance bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm positive the head of the valve is wedged in the piston. Since the engine 'seized' I know there is something wedged in there, causing the crank to not achieve TDC. I'll post more pics once I get the head off, which I planned to do last night but didn't have time. Expect some by the weekend.
If the cyl isn't damaged, how do I check a bent rod without pulling the jug off? Can i measure the piston from TDC to the head gasket? what should that measure?

Dude, I *can't* find the piston. It's gone. The 6" of cylinder wall that broke off? GONE. The valve that broke off and started this? GONE... Just bits and pieces..
Anyone wanna buy a good transmission? Starter? bottom end? lol...
The bike is seized from the 'other' piston. It looks like the metal collected on the bottom of that piston and colided with the balancer weights on the crank... I'm going to spend some time pulling the rest of the engine out and removing the rear head..

I have grenaded engines something fierce in the past but I have never seen this.
The entire piston is literally gone. That's pretty neat.
