Question Brakes (I suck a search)

Have a set of 07 Busa callipers; 5/8 M/C braided lines with dot 4 fluid. When I installed them they where like a rock. The problem is when I leave the bike out in the sun or do not use it for along time the brakes become spongy. Will using a higher dot fluid help (what is the highest I can use for 07 Busa brakes) or is there any other was I can stop this form happening.

Don't mix glycol- and silicone based brake fluids.

The dot4 you're running now is glycol based, 5.1 is too.
Dot5 is silicon based though.

Edit: I strongly doubt the dot4 in itself is causing the sponginess (is there such a word?). Using fresh brake fluid?

My guess is that they're poorly bled. The dot is not to blame.

The dot level is irrelevant to your issues, 3 or 4 or 5.1 are fine and all interchangeable. Sounds like its not properly bled, you have a fluid leak or a faulty master cylinder.

I know this is from a few months ago, but I thought I'd mention that it's not a good idea to mix dot 5 with either 5.1 or 4. Apparently that is what turns the fluid into a jelly-like substance.

ok...

dot 4 absorbs moisture and lasts longer

dot 5 does NOT. dot 5 is race spec and should be bled after every use

mixed should be treated as dot 5 and bled after use

shit I thought I put this in my FAQ.... guess not

moisture/ condensation builds up in the caliper as they heat up from use. If there is an air pocket where condensations builds up or a pocket of water then that pocket will heat and expand locking the caliper. dot 4 absorbs the moisture and prevents this to some degree. dot 5 does not and the system can build water pockets with every use and can become dangerous over a period of time if not maintained

Can you get them back rock solid just by pumping the lever a few times, Simon? If so, sounds like a bleeding issue.
