stripped oil plug
when i bought my tlr 2 years ago i did the oil change and found that the plug had a heil a coil and the plug did not fit on after that. pissed me the fuck off. so i had to retap the plug with a bigger size bolt. it took care of the problem. so far.when this happened i found out that the tlr does not have an oil pan? is this true? any information would be appreciated. did anyone ever had this problem?

I think he is hoping that the drain plug is on a 'pan' that can be removed from the bike rather than just deing tapped in to one of the crankcase halves.

exactly. like most inline fours you can remove the pan and replace it. but on here its engine casing halves. i got a price for it at a local dealer and the priced $1600.00 fuck that. and i didnt want to heil coil it because i some how dont trust them. thanks guys for the information.

Helicoils are better than sound alloy threads if done right.
For example Marchesini fit helicoils as standard to their magnesium wheels for the disc bolt threads.

The reason most sumps end up stripped is it's made of aluminum and is much softer than steel drain plug plug.. A Heli-coil is steel and is a much better match to the drain plug if installed properly.

Yep, I stripped mine pretty quickly after I got my TL in '98 (got confused and kept pushing the wrench the wrong way). I put in a Helicoil, and its lasted nearly 10 years.

when i took the plug out the last time i changed the oil. the plug came out along with the coil. the coil looked like a spring when it came out. all stretched out. so like i sad in the beginning of this thread i retapped the threads with the next size up bolt and used a rubber washer. so far no problems. but now when i do my oil changes i cant use the crush washer. (too small now). so now i kinda wish i used a heli-coil....... oh well.......shit happens........ fuck it.
i still ride the shit outta my bike. draggin knees.
