How do i remove this bearing?
Liike the title says... how do i get it out. it's the bearing on the oil pump side of the crank case. It does not appear you can get behind the bugger to drive it out... getting it in would be easy enough. Do i need some special tool to pull it? Thanks for your help in advance.
Oh, an another thing... why is this gear BLACK? Does it mean it's been cryogenically treated for strength or something?
Oh and another question.. The grove in the Crank bearings.. in the TLS.. they appear to only go half way around the crank. In my TLR motor.. the grove goes ALL the way around the bearing surface. IS this Normall?

Wash the crankcase in petrol or soapy water and dry thoroughly. Remove all the rubber seals etc
Stick in the oven at gas mark 8 for 15 mins
Remove from the oven and place on the kitchen floor with the bearing facing down (on a cloth so you don't burn the floor) the bearing will drop out, if not lightly tap the back of the case behind it with a wooden mallet.
You will find the bearing next to it will also fall out.
Same procedure for fitting new bearings except you put the bearings in the freezer for 10 mins and the case in the oven.
You can get blind bearing pullers but they are expensive and not really required on a TL motor if your oven works.
The shell groove is normal, the TLR and later TLS had a different oil configuration with the left side of the crank having an extra gallery to the big end from that shell and hence had a groove all the way around inside the shell.
Not sure why the gear is black, maybe a protest from some african imigrant worker in Japan (More likely a different hardening process)
God I sound sad, I'm not really a TL geek !

Yep a bit of heat and the aluminum case expands much faster than the steel bearing out they come. Going in it's not always even necessary to heat the case if the bearing is good and cold, but it never hurts either.

Gas Mark 8 just meant pretty hot
Make sure you wash all the oil out cos the wife will never forgive you when you stink the house out, and if washing in petrol certainly make sure it DRY aswell or she will divorce you after emerging from within the rubble
As for Doug, there was no need to agree
