Con Question after Dropped Valve

My TLR had an intake valve snap, and fall into the cylinder, bounce around, and wreck the rest of the valves, seats, and head. There are some gouges in the top of the piston, and scratches on the cylinder.

I have ebayed a new head, and planned to ebay a new OEM piston and cylinder and bolt them in. Then got to worrying that if the piston mashed some metal hard enough to gouge the top, would the con rod survive undamaged? Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anyway to check after pulling off the barrel? Do I also need to worry about the crank?

I really don't want to spend much more money, and am not real eager to split the cases, so my plan was to buy the used piston/cylinder and bolt it back to gether and see if it knocks. If this is foolish right from the start, I might as well cut my loses and start the part out.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a small screw fall into an engine once (out of a carby), it put a slight bend in the rod and hammered the big end bearing too.

Better check it anyway.
