There must have been a great battle in there!
those cylinders are never going to seal correctly with all these marks in there!
What did you drop in tocause such damage? your house keys perhaps?
And those gears... They look great to me.. No need to replace anything....

Are you sure you upshifted? Maybe you have the reverse racing style gear changing pattern and you shifted into 2nd?
I feel your pain... It's quite some damage in there...
I am sure you need barrels, pistons, piston springs, all those gears and forks at least in your pics and maybe you should check rods, crank etc....

All the gears are completey useless except the last photo but need better photo of that - you will have to strip the engine down again if you reuse those
Also check the output shaft for straightness (assemble the cases/shaft and rotate the shaft) I've seen one bent when the gearbox broke up.
The Piston Skirts? (sides) they will be okay after you polish the scratches out. The sealing is done by the rings, not the piston skirt.
but The Piston underside? - my opinion is they will probably be okay? but ... there's a risk they might fracture at the marks? So I would replace myself.
The barrles? - one looks worse than the other, so I would suggest, having a oversize rebore (if marks not too deep) and high compression pistons.

OHMYFG...
Better get a donor engine or a good deal on the parts. Replacing all the damaged parts as shown in the pictures is a must, but will cost you a fortune.
Leave '97 TLS engines alone, don't be tempted.

OH shit... i was just at the track and did the same thing to my motor. but it was not a power shift. I was shifting from 3rd to 4th and now 4th is all clunk clunkclunkclunk... You can hear it in my video. I shifted to 5th and the sound was gone. shifted to 3rd and all noise gone. shift bak into 4th and horrid noise. now i need to strip this motor and see what happened. I sure hope its not as bad as yours. Heres hoping the parts are available.

If it were me I'd probably look into having the cylinders bored and replated. Probably cheaper than new cylinders plus you can then run oversized pistons. Check on the prices of the pistons first as I don't know if oversize pistons are more expensive for the TL. Sam will know all about it for sure

If you're on a budget you can carefully wet and dry the high spots off the barrels so they don't mark the rings. Same with the pistons, use a needle file to remove all the sharp edges that may cause a stress crack to start and also wet and dry (1200 grit) the piston skirts. Carefully check all the pits for any remains of steel particles from the gearbox, these need to be removed from the alloy. Not ideal, you may use a little more oil but will save you a fortune. Maybe worth while replacing the rings as they may be slightly scored aswell.
Every gear in your pictures of the gearbox are knackered, post a wanted add for a new gearbox, but you take your chances. Any worn/chipped rounded dogs on any of the gears will cause problems very quickly.
Replace all 4 gearbox bearings and ideally the oil pump and big end shells as a matter of course whilst the engine is down.
You guys in Russia are used to bringing vehicles back to life on a budget
