have a look at the selector fork guides, they can wear in the case, causing slop. Probably though, another gear is jumping out, affecting third. In other words, not always the gear that wont work is the culprit. strip them down and replace anything suspect? .. your taking it well I must say! .. calmer man than me!

Hey all,

Here is the wear smeg was refering to... a whopping 1.1mm gap was found between the 3/4th drive gear fork & groove... we swapped out the fork for the 3rd/4th drive gear, the gear itself and top drive gear for good measure too. I see the pics you put up show the driven gears as opposed to the drive gears Doug...?

-Should have taken a look at the tolerences on the selector shaft too me thinks!

-Oh the misery after bolting her all together again, hearing her fire up nicely, only to find that same, mildy irritating "I'm not gonna let you play in 3rd today" fault.

Thanks to the sharkinsmeg for his help and marvelous dislpay of tea-drinking capabilities while getting to this stage in the learning process...

Regards... Beeeeev.

I fell your joy at having fixed it.

Tls/r the dogs are no longer sharp and won't stay engaged under power. The actual gears looked good, but the engagement dogs were worn. If you need more I have some more pictures.

Look at first driven gear

click for big un

damage can be subtle, see the worn dog at one o'clock on third gear? This and fifth did me in
