Can't get her to start!
Hello everyone this is my first and I am sure it is not going to be the last post on the forum. I picked up a 97 TL1000s that was lowsided and parked about 5 years ago. The bike has 8000 miles on it and is pretty damn clean except for the fairings. It is going to be my track bike. When I went to go look at the bike me and the P/O had a hard time starting it. The bike did not have a battery in it so we had to jump it with his truck. We changed out the spark plugs a little starter fluid into the throttle bodies and the TL started right up. We let it run for awhile and put it through the gears ( it was on a stand). Well I ended up buying it. The front tire had a slow leak so I decided to have him drop the bike off with his truck.
I got the bike home, bought a battery trickle charged it over night, added lots of fresh gas along with some seafoam. Went to start it and it turns over but won't fire. I pulled out the plugs and the bike is definitely getting gas. Put the plugs back in tried a little starting fluid and got it to fire a couple times... but no luck on starting it.
I ran the ECU codes, but nothing turned up except c00. So the next step is to check if I have good spark. Pulled them out and the spark seems to be quite weak. It sparks but does not POP like they should. The plugs I am trying to get it started with are the NGK CR9EKs.
Weak spark seems to be the only thing preventing this baby to start. The plugs are "new" but they have been sitting in a garage for 5-6 years. Any help guys I would appreciate it. I am really at a lost. I have compression although I havent checked it, fuel and a weak spark. Thanks alot in advance!

Welcome to the Zone.
The first thing you need is a good, fully charge battery. The TL does not like weak batteries. I'd get a new one and then throw in a set of new plugs. I'd bet it will start for you then.

I did buy a new battery properly, charged it, and have fresh plugs in there.

yeah.... i'm guessing you might have fouled the plugs.. most tl engines dont like to be shut down untill they get good and warm.. the fueling maps tends to run rich untill it comes up to temp.. usually bout 180 on the temp guage. Otherwise your shutting it down while the "warm up' map is giving lots of fuel to the plugs. That and the Seafoam adding to the mix may have done the plugs in.
then like 1Crock said.. i bet it starts up.

Yep, sometimes we actually know what we're talking about. The S calls for CR8EKs while CR9EKs are standard for the R. You should be good to go now.

I have the same problem with my TLR -99...worked fine the hole summer until now, first it was hard to get it fired up after a few days of not driving but now I have a new battery and a set of plugs but it won´t start at all...??when I pull out the plugs there is a spark and there is definitely coming gas...
could the power commander have something to do with it...?just installed it...
I hope you can help me so that I can enjoy to few days of this summer that is left...
Thanks!
