so is this something we should check for every 10,000 or so km? i know its a pain to split the cases and look inside but it's better than it going mid corner and leaving the little one without a dad...

im seing a lot of it lately on the Zone and its unnerving.

The thought does cross my mind occasionally especially at some of the fast tracks on long corners

A major explosion and locking the rear is pretty rare, just watch out for the tell tale signs of jumping out of gear or false neutrals or a regular basis. Nick did complain of the gearbox getting awkward and a slight vibration before it went.

Nick dropped round the replacement gearbox bearings last night, so I got the cases back together

We had a chat and it never started jumping out of gear he said, just started vibrating and what felt like a missfire, so it sounds like it lost a tooth or two first which quickly started knocking off the rest until the gear broke a chunk off which took the selector fork with it.

Also noticed that the two little bearing retaining plates for the selector drum were bent allowing the whole selector drum to move side ways by a few mm which wouldn't have helped it keep the gears off each other when not selected

I hear they've started up production of TL engines again, some where in York apparently!

On my 97, I replaced the shift rod with a solid one once I realised they changed them, can only assume they flex slightly?

Also the tubular shift rod tends to cut a groove in the cases. I just caught mine and fitted out with a washer/solid rod to take up slack and prevent binding/wear,

regards checking? For a lot of track use - I've "thought" about having another bottom end all ready to go, swap out once a year is dead easy with just barrles etc, check the other at your lesuire then. .. I bought a giixer instead!

I had no drama on my gearbox issues either. I came into the pits from donnignton and from a high speed road run, down to first gear, both times, simply could not select neutral properly, boith times dogs/forks had gone. Hardly makes sesnse that under no load they go, unless dogs just holding in under load then finally dogs round so bad give up the ghost and then wont re-engage?

That is a mess! Was the gearbox doing anything funny before the failure? Poping out of gear or otherwise acting like it had rounded off dogs?
